Granite City's Police Boundaries.

Posted by bettyann (ralphie) on May 22, 2008, 8:25 pm

Just a question and hopefully someone will be able to enlighten me on the subject. How far is the jurisdiction of the granite police? Today my hubby saw them pull over someone on Lilac on 270 westbound. Also, he always sees them at the turn-a-round .. the state line. Seems like they would have enough to do in the city limits rather than going into missouri doesn't it?

I worked in law enforecement, so I am really getting a kick out of most of these replies.

Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what you are talking about. But trust me.... You don't. I think you just want to make yourself sound smart, when in reality you don't know what you are talking about. This is how bad info gets passed around. If you don't know about the topic....Don't make yourself sound like you do. Cuz some people believe anything they hear.

Keep in mind the road signs announcing the city limits are not the actual borders.

There are also some cities and counties that have agreements between them that allow officers from a neighboring city or county to basically borrow jurisdiction at times, and write you a ticket or file charges under the authority of the city or county you the violation was in.

And that old myth about officers stopping at the jurisdictional boundary is just that: a myth. In reality, if an officer is chasing you, they will pretty much keep chasing you until the wheels fall off. They will get backup from the locals, but they can chase you until they catch you under the fresh pursuit laws. This is spelled out in the IL Vehicle Code (Chapter 625)

Fresh pursuit implies pursuit without unreasonable delay, but need not be immediate pursuit.

Guidelines must be met before a ploice officer can continue the pursuit of a fleeing suspected criminal across jurisdictional or state lines to prevent the escape and effect the arrest.

The alleged misdemeanor or Felony must have been committed, or is being committed, in the physical presence of a law enforcement officer. Under the laws of the jurisdiction in which he would have arrest authority.

For example: When a deputy sheriff from Montgomery County pursues a car driven by a suspected bank robber into Baltimore County (in which he normally has no power to enforce the law), the doctrine of fresh pursuit allows him to make the arrest. It is also called hot pursuit.

A cop always has at least the authority of a private citizen and a private citizen can be a witness to a traffic crime and can sign a citation.

So glad to hear we amuse you, what is it Project Dark Grey?

The initial post on this thread was merely asking a question about jurisdiction. She wasn't making any claims of specific knowledge...just simply asking a question.

The next poster merely stated that GC police have been patrolling 270 for quie awhile now. Which is a fact, since they annexed in that section of roadway. Again, not making outrageous claims of specific knowledge.

Canman mentions that if a pursuit begins in one state it's possible to continue that pursuit over state lines...you, yourself have verified this..I mean, after being in law enforcement and all.

Then your smartass post, spoken like a true smart ass ex-cop, if you ever were one, or a person in a law enforcement position, again if you ever held one. With YOUR know it all attitude, I suspect if you were once employed by a local law enforcement agency, your departure wasn't your idea.

YOU are quite amusing...lurker.

Opinionated, it never fails to amaze me how you can selectively read through a post, especially from someone who is insulting, not to mention, new to the board. Then pick out what you want, weeding through his obvious insults, and then come after me.

You guys are all so funny.

This whole thing started over Bettyann asking a question and a couple people answered then the guy who worked in law enforcement and after giving his opinion of "some don't know what their talking aboutm just acting like it" he simply answered the ORIGINAL question that the thread was about.

THat is so funny too that you guys will sit here and bash an ex detective or current detective or whatever but boy when you need one on your side your not going to be bad mouthing them then.

The words you never want to hear "On behalf of a greatful nation..." (video)

Memorial Day is a United States Federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who perished while in military service to their country.

Editor Coment: Forget politics today.

Memorial Day is for the fallen.

There are very few more noble causes than to give up your life for others.

Let us honor our service people who have given the ultimate sacrifice in order that we may ideally make our part of the world - and possibly others - a better place.

...Because they fought, we have freedoms many all too often take for granted.

To those who lost their lives doing so, your fight and sacrifice were not in vain!

No matter how bad the current leadership is, we all live in the greatest country on earth!

And let us be aware and respectful of the daily sacrifices they and their families have made and continue to make, and honor and thank them at every opportunity

There is never a more sombering experience than burying a family member at Arlington. Its more then griveing. Its a ceremony to show that these men were part of something more then themselves. Seeing some marines shed a tear for a man they never met shows the bond that all marines have. The rifle fire from the salute shakes you to the core. The raw emotion is unforgetable.

Every single one died a hero, and we should honor them as such.

To all the fallen and all who serve. Thank you for your sacrifice. You are not forgotten

I hope that most others remember why today is a holiday.

Know your rights

We all recognize the need for effective law enforcement, but we should also understand our own rights and responsibilities -- especially in our relationships with the police. Everyone, including minors, has the right to courteous and respectful police treatment.

Editor Coment: If your rights are violated, don't try to deal with the situation at the scene. You can discuss the matter with an attorney afterwards, or file a complaint with the Internal Affairs or Civilian Complaint Board.

Know your rights

To fight police abuse effectively you need to know your rights. There are some things you should do, some things you must do and some things you cannot do. If you are in the middle of a police encounter, you need to know what your rights and obligations are.

What to do if the police come to your house

Remember there is no law that says you have to open your door to a cop! If the police knock and ask to enter your home, you don't have to admit them unless they have a warrant signed by a judge. Ask to see the search warrant and make sure it is signed, has the correct date, correct address, and apartment number, ect. If the police do have a search warrant for your home, unless you are under arrest you should be able to leave your home and go where you want. Ask the officer if your "FREE TO GO?" and leave if you choose or you can watch them tear your home apart and go through your personal belongings. You are not under arrest just because they are searching your home.

However, in some emergency situations (like when a person is screaming for help inside, or when the police are chasing someone) officers are allowed to enter and search your home without a warrant.

If you are arrested, the police can search you and the area close by. If you are in a building, "close by" usually means just the room you are in.

Keep your mouth shut!

What you say to the police is always important. What you say can be used against you, and it can give the police an excuse to arrest you, especially if you bad-mouth a police officer.

Remember to protect yourself you never have to answer any questions, "except if the police officer ask for your name, date of birth and address." It's generally a good idea to say the same address that's on your I.D. Staying silent will not hurt you. Do not let the police persuade you to talk. The officer may not like this and may challenge you with words like, "If you have nothing to hide, why won't you speak to me?" Just like the first question, you do not have to answer this one either. They may tell you that staying quiet will make things worse for you or that they'll go easy on you if you talk but this is not true. You have every right to refuse to speak with the police. And you shouldn't speak to them, unless you have first consulted with a lawyer who has advised you differently and who is present when you speak with the police officer.

The police may ask for your name if you have been properly detained, and you can be arrested in some states for refusing to give it. If you reasonably fear that your name is incriminating, you can claim the right to remain silent, which may be a defense in case you are arrested anyway.

You don't have to consent to any search of yourself, your car or your house. If you DO consent to a search, it can affect your rights later in court.

Do not interfere with, or obstruct the police -- you can be arrested for it.

If you are arrested or taken to a police station

Don't resist even if you believe you are innocent.

Don't get into an argument with the police.

Don't run. Don't touch any police officer.

Don't complain on the scene or tell the police they're wrong or that you're going to file a complaint.

Do not make any statements regarding the incident. Ask for a lawyer immediately upon your arrest.

Remember, anything you say or do can be used against you.

You have the right to remain silent and to talk to a lawyer before you talk to the police. Tell the police nothing except your name and address. Don't give any explanations, excuses or stories. You can make your defense later, in court, based on what you and your lawyer decide is best.

Ask to see a lawyer immediately. If you can't pay for a lawyer, you have a right to a free one, and should ask the police how the lawyer can be contacted. Don't say anything without a lawyer.

Within a reasonable time after your arrest, or booking, you have the right to make a local phone call: to a lawyer, bail bondsman, a relative or any other person. The police may not listen to the call to the lawyer.

Sometimes you can be released without bail, or have bail lowered. Have your lawyer ask the judge about this possibility. You must be taken before the judge on the next court day after arrest.

Do not make any decisions in your case until you have talked with a lawyer.

If The Police Stop You What RIGHTS Do You Have?

To stop you the police officer must have specific reasons to suspect your involvement in a specific crime and should be able to tell you the reason. Most times you might be getting pulled over for a traffic violation such as speeding or a tail light is out. Although the stop may seem wrong or unfair, the police believe they have a reason to stop you. Sometimes they just want to know if you are a witness to a crime or if you know about something suspicious. Sometimes they stop you because some other person reported something suspicious about you or someone who looks like you. So just play it cool, ride it out and see what happens. Rule 1 - Treat the COP like you would want to be treated. When stopped or you encounter a police officer stay calm, be polite and civil.

It's not a crime to refuse to answer questions, but refusing to answer can make the police suspicious about you.

Police may "pat-down" your clothing if they suspect a concealed weapon. Don't physically resist, but make it clear that you don't consent to any further search.

Ask if you are under arrest. If you are, you have a right to know why.

Don't bad-mouth the police officer or run away, even if you believe what is happening is unreasonable. That could lead to your arrest.

If you are stopped in your car

Upon request, you must show them your driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance. In certain cases, your car can be searched without a warrant as long as the police have probable cause. To protect yourself later, you should make it clear that you do not consent to a search. It is not lawful for police to arrest you simply for refusing to consent to a search.

If you're given a ticket, you should sign it; otherwise you can be arrested. You can always fight the case in court later.

If you're suspected of drunk driving (DWI) and refuse to take a blood, urine or breath test, your driver's license may be suspended.

Car Searches And Body Searches

Remember they wouldn't ask you if they didn't need your permission! A police officers swore an oath to uphold the Constitution, not to violate your rights against unreasonable search and seizure. If a cop ask or tries to search you, your home or your car say repeatedly, "I DON'T CONSENT TO THIS SEARCH !" "The right to be free from unreasonable searches is one of our most precious First Liberties" You DON'T have to give consent to a law enforcement officer to search your vehicle or home. While you DON'T have to consent, bear in mind that the expectation of privacy in a car is less than the expectation of privacy in your home. Based in part on the lessened expectation of privacy in a car, law enforcement officers are permitted to conduct a warrant less search of a car if the officer has probable cause. "In some cases the police officer will lie and make up a probable cause."

Police will lie to you, it's part of their job...
Lies That The Police Use To Get You To Talk...

There are many ways the police will try to trick you into talking. Its always safest just to say the Magic Words: I am going to remain silent. I want a lawyer. The following are common lines the police use when they're trying to get you to talk: * "You will have to stay here and answer my questions" or "You're not leaving until I find out what I want." * "I have evidence on you. Tell me what I want to know or else." (They can fabricate ''fake'' evidence to convince you to tell them what they want to know.) * "You're not a suspect. Were simply investigating here. Just help us understand what happened and then you can go." * "If you don't answer my questions, I won't have any choice but to take you to jail." * "If you don't answer these questions, you'll be charged with resisting arrest." You don't have to answer any of the police officers questions. Simply say: I have nothing to say! I would like to speak to a lawyer. When the police officer says: Why you want a lawyer, you're not under arrest. Then you should say: AM I FREE TO GO?

If you feel your rights have been violated, file a written complaint with police department's internal affairs division or civilian complaint board.

A sad day in my town....

One of my friends posted a bulletin about a Granite City High School honor student who died in a tragic accident just days before he was to graduate. Here are excerts form the article on STLtoday.com

A high school senior who was to graduate Friday has died from injuries he suffered when he fell from the hood of a friend's moving car and smashed his head against the street in what was described by police as a kid's prank.

Kathy Holleman, spokeswoman from Barnes-Jewish Hospital, said at 8:30 a.m. today that the senior -- Matthew Evans, 18 -- had never regained consciousness.

Evans, 18, suffered the fatal injury about 10:25 p.m. Tuesday in front of his home in the 2400 block of Delmar Ave, six blocks away from Granite City High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society.

Evans family was with him when he died in the intensive-care unit at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Granite City Police Major Jeff Connor, said today, "We have no reason to believe any violation of law was committed by the driver," Connor said. "This is nothing more than a tragic event. Our prayers go out to the Evans family."

"Greenwald, the principal, said Evans had a 4.77 grade point average on a 5-point scale and was ranked 47th in a class of about 500 seniors. Greenwald called him a friendly, polite, well-liked student who had been active at the school.

Editor Coment: Innocent people die and it's frustrating to witness this senseless suffering - but all people die in the end.

Loss is an incredible blow to the body and mind and is never going to be easy. It affects different people in different ways, you may be fine one day, and devastated the next.

It is pain that must simply be endured, like a broken arm - there are things you can do to alleviate it for a little while, but it will eventually hurt again until it fully heals. Believe it or not, as painful as this loss is, it will fully heal in time.

Dwelling on your own pain doesn't honor your friend's memory. Your friend would not want to rob you of your joy in life.

After reading this article I was reminded of of a post from a man who had lost his son:

We must trust God, he knows what is best for all of us. My son died at age 21 on Dec. 21, 2006, from a heartattack with out warning. Was this a bad or evil thing? I started to ask God why, but I remembered what I read in--Romans-9:20 Paul writes: " But who are you, O man, to talk back to (Question) God." I trust God, he knows what is best. I think this way, The son I held in my arms, is being held in God's arms right now, what more could I ask for.

God knows how much pain and strife one can take and he would never allow that individual to experience more than is beyond their capabilty.

He will take care of anyone who comes to Him, but he can't force himself on anyone becuase it has to be their choice.

God has promised us that he will one day wipe all of our tears away and dwell with us in peace for all eternity.

What injustice there is in this world is temporary, everything else will pass away. We have to be patient and look ahead to the promise.

R.I.P. Matt Evans God has called for you with open arms.

The annual salary for a stay at home mom

If a stay-at-home mom could be compensated in dollars rather than personal satisfaction and unconditional love, she'd rake in a nifty sum of nearly $117,000 a year.

That's according to a pre-Mother's Day study released Thursday by Salary.com, a Waltham, Mass.-based firm that studies workplace compensation.

The eighth annual survey calculated a mom's market value by studying pay levels for 10 job titles with duties that a typical mom performs, ranging from housekeeper and day care center teacher to van driver, psychologist and chief executive officer.

One stay-at-home mom said the six-figure salary sounds a little low.

Editor Coment: HAAAAAhahahahahaha! Unpaid, ROFL! "Housewife" is the only position where after 10 years you can retire on alimony and live out the rest of your days ruminating over how he "ruined your life".

Some women marry out of love. Others marry out of ideals they developed while watching a Disney movie. And others marry as a career move.

Do they just recycle the same article every year for Mothers Day adjust for inflation?

This article is even more worthless than the usual articles they put out this time of year.

The other articles would at least name the occupation and time spent doing that work in the other studies. It was still BS paying an amateur a professional's wage, but at least it was open.

CEO?
Psychologist?
Chef?
High end hooker?

Yeah, I'm sure the average stay-at-home mother's skills command the pay of a professional.

What's a fair hourly rate for sitting in a chair and watching QVC and Dr. Phil all day?

117k per year, huh? Okay.

I seriously question the salary.com calculation. They don't seem to take into account benefits. For example, If I pound my wife's snooch about twice a week. A stud of my caliber is easily worth $2,500 per round. Therefore she is getting $260,000 per year in free benefits. She is therefore overpaid and owes me about $140k.

It's good to know that if I became a stay-at-home dad that I would be worth over 145,000 dollars a year. Ya know what's funny? No one ever writes an article about how much a guy should earn for the things he does at home. I haven't seen salary.com or anyone tabulate what that's worth. Equal pay for equal work!

This article assumes men don't do any of the parenting. A father's contribution is just as important.

Am I missing something here? Am I the only one that thinks having children is a choice? Is there someone going around and forcing people to have children?

Why do these women think that they should be paid for everything they do?

Stay at home moms should consider themselves lucky, because with the rising costs it is getting more difficult to sustain a whole family on one income.

Being a stay at home mom is a privilege, not a job. Articles like this are ridiculous.

FTA "The eighth annual survey calculated a mom's market value by studying pay levels for 10 job titles with duties that a typical mom performs, ranging from housekeeper and day care center teacher to van driver, psychologist and chief executive officer."

Yeah, little hint Salary.com, unlicensed psychologists don't get paid at all, so you can take those hours right off your list.

As for being CEOs.... Well, CEOs of a company of 4 (typical family size) probably make about $40k a year, and work 80 hours a week. And overtime? If it's taking you that much time to get things done, you need to be better organized.

Taking care of a home is completely unskilled brainless labor. Yeah, you can be better or worse at it than other people, but it's not rocket science to pick up and wash clothes, do dishes, and vacuum. Cooking is pretty much the same. It's not hard to figure out how to make dinner not taste like shit, especially in today's world of prepackaged meals.

I could go on for every job on the list that mom's supposedly do, but it would be pointless. Especially when you consider that being a mom is a choice, a choice to not get paid for all these things mothers do, just as being a dad is the same kind of choice.

A friend of mines ex was constantly complaining that "all" he had to do was go to a job 80 hrs a week while she slaved 24/7 for him and the two kids. This was, of course, why the house and the kids were always a mess.

Often, He would call from work in the afternoon to check in, and wake her up from her nap.

One day, he had enough. He offered to switch roles, and she took him up on it. She found a job at 40 hrs per week, and he quit his jobs to stay home with the kids. They decided to try this for six months and see what happened.

At first, the kids were very confused because he didn't go back to bed as soon as mommy went to work. They were also confused because the TV stayed off all day.

By the end of the first week, he'd caught up on all of the stuff that she'd let go for years, while keeping up with his own chores such as yard work, maintaining the cars and house, etc.

She would come home, demand dinner, then go to bed.

I guess I forgot to mention that he was ALWAYS the cook in the family. He also had been doing all of his own laundry because he actually liked clean clothes. Now he was doing the laundry for everybody.

The kids were happier, things got done around the place that he didn't used to have time for, and the kids ate healthy meals during the day for a change.

Meanwhile, his ex would come home from work, demand dinner, then go to bed.

At the end of six months, she went into a panic when he told her that things were going back to the old way. He told her that he really enjoyed his little vacation, but their savings had run out and he needed to go back to working 80 hours a week.

Two weeks later, the house was a mess again.

He said it wasn't very difficult. He got bored with it because there was so much free time.

Ladies (by this I mean stay at home moms who have some crazy sense of entitlement), you're full of shit. Unless you have more than two kids, if you find it hard to raise your children and keep house, you suck at your job.

That is all. You may now continue with your angry caps-lock typing and name calling. Oh, and happy mother's day.

The Fall of the Jedi (video)

Something I found somewhere. I think the movie speaks for itself.
Click here to watch the video

Editor Coment: "Execute order 66"

Then it all started...

The fall of heroes... "So the last spark of light flickers off into the shadows of darkness."

The Jedi are members of an ancient and noble monastic order devoted to public service; they swear allegiance to the Senate and to democracy. The members of the Jedi Order fought for peace and justice in the Galactic Republic.

Realizing how dangerous the Jedi were to his plans for a new Galactic Empire, and knowing the Jedi would rebel against him. Palpatine secretly initiated a clever plan to massacre the Jedi and the fall of the Old Republic.

When the Jedi Council learned that Palpatine was the Sith Lord they attempted to arrest and remove him from power. Palpatine declares the Jedi traitors and executes order 66... secret orders to exterminate all Jedi.

Order 66 was really dramatic... without warning the Jedi knights were tragicly betrayed and murdered by their own allies.

Palpatine sends his new apprentice to the Jedi Temple along with the 501st Clone Trooper Legion to kill all of the Jedi there, including the children.

He then reorganizes the Republic into the Galactic Empire, declaring himself Emperor of the Galaxy.

All reamining Jedi are hunted down and killed.

However, it was the Sith Lords failure to kill the two most important Jedi that eventually lead to his demise.

This video really conveys the sadness of the fall of the Jedi and of the Old Republic.

You really feel the Jedi pain over the betrayl.

Sad but its the best part of the movie!

Got a big bottom? Now a reason to be glad

A type of fat that accumulates around the hips and bottom may actually offer some protection against diabetes, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.

Subcutaneous fat, or fat that collects under the skin, helped to improve sensitivity to the hormone insulin, which regulates blood sugar.

"It was a surprising result," said Dr. Ronald Kahn of Harvard Medical School in Boston, whose study appears in the journal Cell Metabolism.

Editor Coment: LOL @ this. Hold on, let me get this straight, there are a group of scientists who actually researched the impact having a fat ass would have on diabetes?

Um???

"Hey guys, should we were work on solving the energy crisis?"

"Eh, no"

"How about cancer or AIDS'

"Yawwnnn"

"How about the effects having an apple bottom ghetto bootilicious butt has on health issues?"

"Hells to da Yeah"

Your tax and tuition dollars hard at work.

I love girls with thick thighs and a thick ass.... just... yeah.

Jenna Von Oy FTW.

/Pow! Ghetto booty.

Oh, CHRIST yes. I'd work that like a rented mule. I've had the hots for her ever since Blossom.

A little bit of junk is okay, but too much and I gotta go.

Social conditioning did a number on me, generally, I like my girls slender and petite.

Look at how much sexuality has changed in just the last decade or so.

Girls wear as their "everyday outfits" attire that would have only been found on actual hookers 20 years ago.

And is it me or have HS/College girls gotten way more attractive somehow in the last 10-15 years.

I don't just mean how most of them are tramping it up and such with their attire but they're physically much more attractive then they used to be.

Better skin, boobs, asses, bone structure, etc.

Honestly, take a look at a HS yearbook from 1998 and compare it to 2008.

It's astounding.

And no where near enough time has elapsed for this to be the result of breeding between two attractive people, etc.

That takes decades, generations, etc.

And they can't ALL be going to the gym all the time.

How did young women get so freaking attractive all of a sudden???
