How to change your gender on your Washington driver's license or ID card
As of April 2008
1. Write a dated letter of intent that includes the following:
- Under physician's care for gender change for _____ (period of time).
- How long cross living
- That you are on hormones
- That your license is to reflect your new gender, which is ______.
- State that the new gender marker is necessary as part of your treatment.
- Sign and include your name, address, phone #, and email
2. Get your doctor to write you a letter. It must be written by a physician. Nurse practicioners and therapists can no longer write this letter for you. They must print it on their physician's letterhead that includes their medical #, address, and phone #. The body of the letter should include the following:
- Verifies client is in process or has completed a gender change.
- If not complete, must verify that changing gender designation is necessary for applicant's treatment.
- Repeat data on hormones: what reason, how long, what treatment, how long you've been cross-living, etc (make sure the times match what you wrote in your letter of intent!)
- "This letter is to confirm that the next appropriate step in this process is for his/her license to reflect the new gender which is _____."
- If it does not say that you have completed reassignment, make sure it says that you are currently under their care for reassignment.
3. Make a photocopy of your current ID.
4. Mail it all along with $10 to:

It will take about ten days to process. When the assistant director gives their final approval, they will send you a letter of authorization which you can then take with you to any Washington State DMV to get a new card.
