The Progressive Women’s Caucus Has Gone Global!

 On the invitation of the program committee, Kimala Price was a panelist in a special plenary session at Countdown 2015’s Global Roundtable (www.countdown2015.org), an international meeting on sexual and reproductive health held in London, England from August 30 to September 2, 2004. More than 650 researchers and activists from around the world participated in the three-day conference, which was sponsored by Family Care International (FCI), International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), and Population Action International (PAI).

The session, entitled “The Technological Revolution,” examined alternative ways of organizing around the issue of reproductive and sexual health from the Internet to television to music. Price’s presentation focused on political organizing within the hip hop community in the United States, particularly the work of the Progressive Women’s Caucus at the recent National Hip Hop Political Convention in Newark, NJ. Her presentation was well-received and generated a lot interest in the PWC from conference participants.

The other panelists included:

  • Joan Blades, one of the co-founders of MoveOn who discussed using the Internet as an organizing tool for political change in the United States;

  • Jenny Richards, a British TV producer (TVE Television Trust for the Environment) who discussed her recent documentary on Church-affiliated abstinence-only/anti-condoms HIV/AIDS programs in Southern Africa; and

  • Momir Pantelic, the panel’s moderator who is also very active in the youth movement on HIV/AIDS in Eastern and Central Europe
