| Lore on Goblins They were a breed of small, swarthy, malicious beings, although goblin as a term is often used as a general term for the uglier inhabitants of Faerie. They sometimes appear in the form of animals, which appropriately reflects their bestial nature. They are the thieves and villains of faerie, companions of the dead, especially on Halloween. However, not all Goblins are evil. The Knockers who inhabit Cornish and Devon tin mines make the knocking noises that gave them their name, to indicate rich veins of ore. They are generally friendly towards the miners although they enjoy making mischief. Knockers are exhibitionist and like nothing more than teasing miners by making faces and performing grotesque dances. Koblods are the German version of the Knockers, and are not so helpful, for they tend to be generally troublesome and mischievous, frustrating miners in their work and undoing labors. But sometimes they are unexpectedly helpful. The Wichtlein, from Southern Germany, behave much the same way. They announce the death of a miner by tapping 3 times. When a disaster is about to happen, they are heard digging, pounding and imitating miners work. The Welsh have their own mining goblins called Goblynau (Koblernigh). They are the Welsh cousins to the Cornish Knockers. These creatures, using mining tools, are seen working industriously at the seam faces of mines. The knocking of their picks and hammers is lucky, a sign of heavy ore contest. However, for all their labors, nothing is achieved for they are simply mimicking miners, totally enjoying the imitation. HP Goblins are not nearly as friendly as elves and are more clever then gnomes. The goblins in Harrys world have rebelled against wizards several times in the past. The truce between the two sides is uneasy and the wizard world has not totally embraced the goblin race. That balance makes them perfect guardians for Gringotts Bank, a task that requires they be both trustworthy and ruthless! We will continue Goblins in the next lesson... |
