Reading the Leaves

As in the preparation of the cup, the procedure for interpreting the leaves varies with the character of the reader, but there are certain consistencies that may be considered as guidelines of a traditional reading.

There are
chronological and non-chronological readings (a choice is usually determined by whether the question at hand contains a time element), but both begin from the cups handle, which represents the querent in the here and now.

Chronological readings trace time beginning with the right side of the handle and proceeding clockwise around the cup to the handles left side, which in traditional reading describes the span of one year, with the side directly across the handle indication six months into the future. However, a cup may designate a shorter or longer period, the important thing is for the querent and Tasseomancy to agree upon a time span before the reading begins.

Leaves near the brim of the cup symbolize events that will take place closer to the beginning of the month, and leaves toward the bottom show events that will occur at the end of the month. Patterns at the bottom of the cup and any patterns left on the saucer influence the whole of the fortune or question being considered.

Tea Leaf Reading
Lesson Three
In a non-chronological reading, which is most suitable for love and money questions, the position of the leaves in the cup has positive connotations, while the same pattern near the cups bottom will be negative. For example, leaves that form a hat-like pattern denotes new opportunities if found at the tip of the cup, these will be opportunities for success. If this pattern is found at the bottom of the cup, they are tricks, leading the querent into dangerous new territory. Leaves that appear opposite the cups handle indicate the influence of strangers.

Once the tealeaves have come to rest, the tasseomancer should inspect the cup form different angles. This is no time to hurry for patience is a virtue in reading. The image in the leaves may not reveal them selves if you are in too much of a hurry. Take your time; is that a spider (a symbol for good fortune) or a wreath (a symbol of sorrow) at the bottom of the cup? A careful, imaginative attention and receptivity are a readers most valuable job skill. An inconclusive or unremarkable cup, in which you see no patterns, or shapes of note, means that nothing very important will happen in the course of time covered by the reading and is a valid finding in its self.
The clearer and larger the symbols, (or patterns), the stronger and more significant their implications. Closeness of shapes suggests their relations: the stronger within a quarter-inch are always considered together. A scattering of the leaves indicates a more diffused personality, while clustering suggest intensity and conflict. Few leaves in the cup denote clarity and direct action, while many, will-dispersed leaves suggest confusion or extravagance. Some shapes have special meaning, but many are exactly as they appear; a heart situated near an airplane may suggest that the querent will go somewhere he or she has been longing to go.

Here are some common symbols:

3 small leaves close to one leaf a
man
2 leaves close to a small leaf a
woman
Small leaves in a triangular shape
a child or children
Chain of leaves a
journey, the more winding the chain,
the more roundabout the travel.
Initials or letters initials of people having some relationship
or contact with the querent.
Numbers always
interpreted literally as the number
represented.
Wavy lines
uncertainty, aggravation.
Dots small spots in a cluster indicate
money.
