Because this came up in a question from one of my students, I thought it a good time to cover death in dreams.
As you can see, it does not represent a bad thing, it could mean many things. Usually it means the ending of one thing, like a way of life, or the end of the school year, or something more personal within you. Look at it as a renewal. Dreams of death represent the ending of one phase so a new one can begin. They can show forthcoming finalities, such as the end of a marriage or career. These are symbolic dreams and are unlikely to forecast an actual event. If the dead person is someone you know, consider what aspect of yourself that person represents.
For example, to dream of your mother dying could represent the death of the motherly side of your own nature. Perhaps you should try to be more caring and maternal, or perhaps plans you have should be nurtured rather than killed off. Alternatively, you may also be expressing your hidden feelings about the person. Do you secretly resent the person or have desire to be independent of them. |

Ask yourself:
1. What is being expressed in the dream? Perhaps you fear dying and the dream is reminding you of your won mortality? It is healthy to accept that death comes to everyone; this realization broadens your spiritual perspective and loosens the grip of material craving. Everything in the world is dust of stars, but look deep within yourself and you may find the part of yourself that is eternal.
2. Am I trying to free myself from something? You may want to leave your old self behind so a new you can be reborn. Free yourself to new potentials. There is no need to be a martyr. The way forward is to establish a new set of values that are beneficial to you and others.
3. Do I feel suicidal? There's no need to punish yourself or others because of how you feel. Everyone occasionally feels a desire to retreat from life's problems or from feelings of failure. But suffering is a blessing as well as a curse. It is through adversity that you grow and become a better person. Be like a strong tree that bends with the wind but never breaks. Better times will inevitably come again.Has someone you known been hurt lately, you could be superimposing a loved one in their place in your dreams because you fear their loss. What you have to remember is, when putting the dream down in your Dream Journal to leave room for the interpretation, your thoughts on why you had the dream, and a place for the dream symbols we cover in class. You may not know the meaning that day or the next, and may come back to it in at a later date and inter information regarding the dream. I can't tell you how many times it will be a day or two before I go "Ahhh, that is why I dreamed that!" |

Here are some more symbols and meanings. Relationship in dreams, it is important to remember that the dreaming mind is intent not upon duplication reality but, rather, upon commenting on reality. It thus frequently uses dream characters as symbols rather than as attempts at depicting actual people with whom the dreamer is involved in waking life. The dream is more concerned with its message than with portraying people as they really are. So, in the course of a dream, a friend transformed into a stranger may reveal a basic disagreement in the dreamer's general feelings about friendship.
Animals often symbolize aspects of relationships, and each dream animal usually embodies the emotion with which the behavior is linked. Territorial birds such as blackbirds can represent jealousy, while thieving birds may suggest a threat to a relationship from an outside party. Feathers whether or not they appear in the same dream as birds, often represents a gift, expressing the desire to show warmth or tenderness to someone close to the dreamer. |

Birds also can show your desire to escape from something you consider to be boring or commonplace. You may want to be free of a situation and have a desire to take wing. Or want to rise above a habit. A flock of birds may symbolize your desire to be part of a group, to fit in. For centuries, it was considered a good omen to dream of birds. Here are some examples:
Albatross means "good luck coming".
Buzzard means, "beware of gossip".
Roster (if crowing) means "you will receive good news".
A dove means, "a peaceful solution to your problems will be found".
Eagle means "business success".
A goose means "improvements ahead".
Hawk means, "a bright future awaits you".
Magpie means "a change in plans in the matter of the heart".
Owl means, "beware of disappointment".
Stork means, "family problems are imminent".
Turkey means "bad luck unless you dream of killing or eating it". |
