Lesson Fourteen
Dream Interpretation
The Ancient Greeks and Romans believed that dreams could offer not only diagnoses of their ills, but also cures for them. Dreams could indeed be an active source of medical help, just as them can be used today in other areas of problem solving. Carl Jung recognized that some dreams give clear messages concerning both physical and psychological health.

Sometimes dreams spot an illness before you are aware of any symptoms. If your dream persists, get your health checked by a doctor. Also, the dream may be highlighting anxieties and inner conflicts. You need to heal these inner troubles and find psychological harmony. If someone else in your dream has a disharmony, you may either harbor hostile feeling or fear for the person's mental health.
Being hospitalized may show a desire to let go of control over one's own body or fear of losing this control. Being a patient may suggest that you are undergoing a healing process, or it could be a punyou need more "patients".
Illness in dreams does not necessarily indicate a waking illness but may represent uncleared bad feelings. You may not be able to cop with a situation and, like a child, may take illness as an easy way out. Perhaps the dream represents a form of self-punishment.
Weight loss represents the draining effect upon the dreamer of over-possessive or demanding people, particularly close relatives or friends. Weight gain or bloating may refer to our liking for flattery and may indicate that we' re draining the life from others.
Toilet dreams usually represent the dreamer's public anxiety or shame, or his or her urgent wish to express or unburden the self, whether for creative or for other reasons. To dream of unsuccessfully searching for a toilette may mean a conflict between the need to express oneself in public and a fear of doing so. While to dream of finding a toilet engaged indicates jealousy of another's position or creativity; while causing a toilet to overflow indicates fear about losing emotional control or failure to discipline creative potential. Or it could mean that you just have to go to the bathroom!
Bathing represents psychological cleansing. You are trying to get rid of old attitudes. Water can symbolize your emotional nature. You may be trying to cleanse yourself of negativity. Perhaps you have feelings of guilt or are uncomfortable with your feelings.
A brush may symbolize your desire to brush away problems. Perhaps you are taking a cavalier attitude to circumstances that need serious consideration? If you dream of weeping up a mess, you may desire to be pure within or may have a fear of dirty thoughts.
Getting an injection may mean you need to "inject" more enthusiasm, fun, and determination into your life. Injections imply healing or protection, so this dream may be showing you ways to become more fit
Paralysis means you may feel that you are unable to act to deal with a situation or inner problem. It is likely that your won attitudes and emotional baggage are making you unable to act. You may have fears or anxieties about a general or specific issue that are troubling you in more ways than you admit. For every problem, there is a solution. If you keep a careful note of your dreams for the rest of the week, they may offer solutions to help you resolve your hidden anxieties. If you dream of someone else being paralyzed, they may represent an aspect of yourself that is not being given free expression.
A pill in a dream may show you have realized something that is just the medicine you need to restore inner harmony. The pill may represent the bitter pill you have to swallow.
If you dream of
consuming something poisonous, it may indicate that you are introducing something into yourself that is harmful to your well being. This may be bad feelings or bitterness on your part. Similarly, the poison could represent underhanded actions of others or a fear of being the target of lies.
Now let's talk about being at home:
Domestic events are the most common subject matter of dreams. These mostly occur in Stage 1 and Stage 2 dreams: these often have trivial events from the recent past, especially the previous day, which the dreaming mind has selected because it recognizes their value in symbolizing important material that is stored in the dreamer's unconscious mind.
When interpreting domestic dreams, it is important to look for irregularities between the dream material and waking experience. Often the dream is set in your own home, or a familiar home of a friend or family member. Items of furniture may be in the wrong place, or appliances have grown or become smaller in size.
To dream of home may be about your need for security. You may feel that your situation is better now. Do you feel at home? Perhaps you feel that after a period of struggling you are now on "home turf". The dream may be about your childhood.
When food is being prepared for other people, this may indicate a wish to influence others, or make them dependent. If the emphasis is upon the food itself, the underlying meaning may be the dreamer's desire to mould some truth or insight into a more eatable form.
Baking in dreams may mean plans you are nearly ready to put into action. You should soon benefit, for bread represents the qualities of nourishment and wholesomeness.
A house represents your psychological condition. Specific rooms in the house detail what aspect of your or psychological life the dream is highlighting. Attic: the intellect. Bathroom: base feelings, childhood thoughts, and cleanliness. Bedroom: the private self. Den: work and efficiency. Library: intellectual life. Living room: your public image. Roof: an overview of yourself. Windows: the way to interact with the world.
The cellar represents the deepest levels of the mind. It is a dark, damp, and sometimes frightening place where lurk creatures that shun the light of day. A cellar may be a symbolic container where you discard all the fears and problems you do not want to deal with. In this clandestine world, you will discover your repressed fears, worries, and feeling of guilt and shame. Once you acquaint yourself with these fears and bring them into the light, they will no longer bother you.
A cupboard may represent something you open in order to reveal a truth. Perhaps a skeleton is hidden in the cupboard, something about yourself you do not want to accept or revel. As a cupboard may contain clothes, the dream may be telling you about the side of yourself you present to the world.
To dream of
opening curtains can show your readiness to look at what has been hidden, closing curtains may show a desire to hide or repress your feelings. Theater curtains can represent the beginning or ending of something. Death has sometimes been called "the final curtain". Perhaps your behavior has been a bit of a performance, but you are now ready to change your ways.
