The Eric Garner Case

Yet another case of profiling is shown the the death of Eric Garner. Garner had long been suspected by the police of selling loose ciggarettes, but Garner consistently denied incoming accusations and eventually said he was tired of the harassment he was getting. At one encounter with multiple police officers, Garner attempted to resist arrest but was apprehended and eventually killed by the police officer. Apparently the officer was feeling threatened enough to take action, and choke-holded Garner on the scene. The response to this incident was as bad as the responses to the others with the general public calling foul play. The problem with suspicion is that it can be unwarranted, meaning anyone can be a suspect of anything without necessarily having just cause. This man became a suspect in an actual crime, but rather than peacefully bring him in police try to arrest him by force. The details of the fight itself are unclear. There was likely an alternative to killing Garner that wasn't chosen and many people agree the decision was made in part because Garner was black.
