If you are getting frequent lock-ups with your machine, you probably just need to run a simple scandisk.  You do this by clicking on Start>Accessories>System Tools>then Scandisk>.  Make sure you choose the correct drive, for OS problems, choose drive C:.  Choose standard scan, then, automatically fix errors, then click on start.  Scandisks should be done 1-2 times a week.

I also recommend that you run a defrag about once a month.  Running Defrag keeps all your files and programs in order, meaning, that, your programs will start faster and it will keep your files from fragmenting, which helps you fee up disk space.  You run Disk Defragmentor very much like you run Scandisk.  You click on Start>Acessories>System Tools, then choose Defrag.  Choose the drive you wish to defrag then click Start.

If you plan to play with your registry, a good tip is to back up your current one.  This is done by simply clicking on Start, go up to, and click on Run.  Then type in REGEDIT.  Once the Registry is open click on Registry then Export.  It will let you save your current registry wherever you deem necessary.  Once its saved you can make whatever changes you need to make.  If your changes do not work simply click on that back that you just made and it will replace the changed registry.

Another good trick to do is an operation in DOS.  This only works in WINDOWS98.  Click on Start>Shutdown, then choose the restart in DOS mode option then click on Ok.  It will boot into DOS, and be at the C;\WINDOWS directory.  At this point, you need to type in "scanreg /fix". This will go in and fix small registry errors that have occurred in your registry.  Once it finishes, type in "EXIT".  Then it will boot you into windows.
