| Backbeat is a passionate and tragic love story set during the Beatles' wild months in Hamburg in the early 1960s. It is the story of the fifth Beatle, Stuart Sutcliffe (Stephen Dorff), and the two most important people in his life - his lover Astrid Kirchherr (Sheryl Lee) and his best friend, John Lennon (Ian Hart). John Lennon and Stuart Sutcliffe are inseparable friends at art school. In the summer of 1960, John persuades Stuart to abandon his painting and join his rock 'n' roll band "The Beatles" to go to Hamburg where they will play in clubs in the red light district. There they discover an incredible new world bursting with creative madness and unbridled energy. They also meet Astrid, a beautiful photographer, who falls in love with Stuart. John is consumed with envy as the pair embarks on a wild affair. As the summer draws to an end, Stuart is forced to choose between his deep loyalty for John and the band, his love for Astrid and ultimately his future with what is to become the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world. |
