In My Workshop...
My background experience and knowledge involves farming, horticulture, engineering, building and construction as well as public and private sector business consultancy and administration.
When I retired I built a well-equipped workshop, suitable for cabinet making, engineering, blacksmith work, etc.
I am also known as "Mr. Fixit", to family, friends and neighbours, (like so many other grandfathers),. When cars, bicycles, household furniture, etc. require repairs, they come to Opa ("Mr. Fixit").
Retired!. (Well alleged J...,at
least I can spell the word), allows me an opportunity to help others. These are
interests I really enjoy doing.
The children have called the workshop "Opa's Thingumabob Fixit and
Design Shop".
Whew! What a name! As well as making furniture pieces, I love working in wrought iron and copper
art objects and engineering.
Among some of the cabinetwork pieces I have constructed, include a special
craft cabinet for Anitas petit point work and her pastel work. due to
her illness, she has little strength in her hands or body to struggle to open
the drawers. I have used easy glide slides on the drawers for that
purpose.
Her drawers were laid out so that everything was in its place and she was
able to keep them tidy.
She was very artistic, doing very beautiful work. She designed many of
her own petit point and tapestry patterns and where she used bought patterns,
she modified them and used her own colours.
Anita had a perfect colour sense and co-ordination. The result
that her work had a depth of colour and shading that they look
three-dimensional.
Her other talents were writing poetry and childrens stories and planning
and designing her web pages.
Prejudiced you say! Of course, I admit to being prejudiced.
In addition to her craft cabinet, I made her a three cornered, tall display
cabinet for her special ceramics pieces, including her Delph Blue from Holland.
I have already completed a 15 tonne capacity hydraulic press and many other
projects.
In the process of completion, are a power hacksaw and a working model of an
Australian windmill.
In a future planning stage I hope to build a working model Dutch
windmill. this is for Anita, in her memory. I had planned it before
she passed away but was never to complete it in time.
These projects are fitted in between working on cars and doing maintenance
and repair-work for family and friends or as donations for organisations.
Often planning goes astray, as other things take priority, e.g. if a
mothers' car breaks and it is their only mode of transport, then it
will take priority over other plans:)
There always seems to be many things to do. My daughter once said to me,
"Dad, you might need to come out of retirement to have a holiday".
In addition, I have used my engineering skills to make and design special
equipment for dismantling and re-assembling automatic transmissions for a motor
mechanic friend
If you click on the following link it will take you to Prof's Project
Showcase, where you can read and view them. Some of them will have a story
and others will be just the pic of the completed work.
