ST. BARTHOLOMEW PROJECT DESIGNING THE CONCEPTS FOR THE PROJECT.
The Photo above is the inside of the beautiful old Roman Catholic Church in the centre of Geelong. I will add some photos of the outside when I have them to hand.
Early this year I was approached by a some members of the St. Mary's St. Bartholomew Committee (I have used the English translation of the name) from the Roman Catholic Italian community and asked if I could build and design a pedestal to stand the statue of St. Bartholomew. I drew up one concept, but modified this as I perceived a better picture of what was wanted. A drawing of the original concept and a photo of the final pedestal without the carvings added, is shown below:
The final concept was based on an octagon with the top of the pedestal having two octagons of different sizes spaced to make a 16 sided top and then the octagon box was fitted to the top of this. The pedestal is wider at the top than the bottom, and by using 4" x 1 1/2" timber. I was able to leave a space between each piece to allow light to penetrate the pedestal and give it some depth in its appearance. This was stained inside and outside.
