The Rulers of our Household

We have three cats in our household. They think they are people.

I am also sure the cats all think Prof. is a ""soft touch"". They were invited into our home to keep Anita company, especially when I was away for long periods. I suspect their attitude is, "if you ""con"" Prof.", you are home and hosed.

Maybe Anita might have given them some counselling on how to handle Prof. before they came. They are certainly too smart for their own good, LOL.

JENNAH

Jennah is a Burmese Cat, very much a lady, and an aristocratic sovereign at that:). Although small, she has ruled this house and all in it, for 17 years.

She demands attention (and gets it). Now, getting on in years she must have a hot water bottle heated to her satisfaction. This, when she thinks she needs it, not when we mere humans think she needs it. It means day or night. She will call you if she thinks it is getting too cold. Her meals must be also be served at exactly the right temperature and when she wants them and she seems to have expensive tastes and will ignore anything else.

NOTE: An update since this was first written. Jennah turned 18 on the 3rd of November 2000. She has no teeth and is very frail. both Anita and I worried over her as she seemed so frail and did not seem to eat a lot.

However when you pick her up she purrs and rubs her head against you, demonstrating she is comfortable and in no pain.

When I spoke with the veterinarian about how frail she was getting and that she was also blind, she asked me whether I wanted to put her down. I told her no, but then I would not like it if she was suffering in any way. I was told she still loves life and just wants to be cuddled.

She would let me know when life is not worth living but as long as she was happy I need not contemplate putting her to sleep. I am not sure how I would handle that if that is the decision to make. Well I guess I will face it when the time comes.

Since Anita passed away she comes to me more and more just to be cuddled and sits on my lap every chance she gets or just sits at my feet when I am working on the computer.

Jennah, tolerates James and Chang in her "Grande Dame manner, (although barely). She considers them interlopers in this establishment.

She blames them for the loss of her friends Mitzie and Mischa, (miniature dachshunds). Sadly, both dogs died at around 8 and 10 years old. Jennah and they were great mates.

MITZIE AND MISCHA

Mitzie and Mischa, strictly were miniature dachshunds, and therefore should not be included in this discussion:)

However they did not know they were not cats and behaved as cats as the lived in a household that was dominated by cats.

They were two of the most lovable and loyal dachunds one could meet. They enjoyed the family but they did not think of themselves as dogs but cats. Mitzie, the first one in the house, in particular would kidnap any kitten she found and would mother and protect them.

The two dogs died before James and Chang came on the scene later, but Jennah thinks they must have been responsible for their disappearance.

JAMES

James is a foundling of unknown ancestry. He has lived here for approximately 8 years. There is some suspicion he might be a prick-eared throwback of a Scottish fold cat, judging by his coat and shape. He is fat, lazy and friendly. He looks like a box with four short legs on each corner Really, a very much laid back cat indeed and a bit of a rascal. He is not very brave. He usually waits until someone else races to fight or protect the premises and then fights his battles from the rear.

CHANG

Chang is the latest in this menagerie. He is a 10-year-old Burmese and claims to come from a five-generation line of aristocrats. He came to us when he was retired from duties at a Marina as a "watch" cat.

He loves children and people, as long as they dont try to pick him up. He will let us do that but no one else. He is a bit of a snob, considering himself superior to James, whom he considers an uneducated foundling. Sometimes, he does concede James is smart, (at least streetwise) and at least when he is a beneficiary of Jamess escapades.

Despite his aristocratic lineage, Chang is also somewhat naive and dumb. He always seem to be where something has gone wrong and James easily takes advantage of him and leads him into all sorts of trouble.

What hope have humans against cats, such as these, lol? They are so much smarter than we are. What other animals can persuade humans to pamper and spoil them and yet persuade humans into thinking cats are graciously doing them a favour by allowing them to do it:)

Dogs cannot do it. Dogs fawn over humans and make humans feel great for having them. They are loyal and protective, working hard to please their human "masters".

Not so cats. You may never own a cat. They will own you:)
