The purpose of this chart is to assign a numeric value to each of the letters in the alphabet. These values can be interpreted through divination.
The value of a letter is equal to the column it is in. Find 'M' on your charts. Notive that it lies in the fourth column. Thus, the value of 'M' is four. M = 4
Find the values of the following:

P = ___
A = ___
R = ___
Z = ___
You should of found the following values; 3; 7; 1; 9; and 8. Now that we know how every letter is assigned a value, we can begin to convert words into values.
Mr. Malfoy, if you will approach the board and print your name on it. Then we will find the value for each letter.

You should find the result to be 50.
Step three:
What we want is a single digit value for Mr. Malfoy's name. So we take the two digits in fifty and add them together.
5 + 0 = 5.
In this case it was simple, but what if the total value for the name had been 87? You may find you have to add more than once:
8 + 7 = 15
1 + 5 = 6
or if the value is 149
1 + 4 + 9 = 14
1 + 4 = 5
For your homework assignments I'd like each of you to find the value for your full name, the names of three other Hogwarts students, and for the name, Severus Snape, and my name, Caticus.
It is always best to use a full name, for that is a person's true name. Many of us do not have middle names, but if you do, please include them. Show your work, and hand it in to my office with the subject heading:
