| Divination Lesson One | ||||||||
| July 7, 2003 Some say that fate is a fickle force, other's think that their destiny will rule their lives. Still again, many don't believe the future can ever truly be read. For thousands of years human wizards and creatures of all kinds have been trying to divine what is to come. Later in this term we will explore some of the earliest forms of divination. But I thought it would be best to start on a practical lesson. Today we will begin our journey into Arithmancy. Arithmancy is the science of divining meaning from numbers and is related to the word arithmatic. Arithmancy requires only a quill, a few pieces of parchment, and the ability to add numbers. For this lesson we will learn how to convert our alphabet to numbers: Take out a piece of lined paper. Turn the paper sideways. In between the now vertical lines write the numbers 1-9. Then immediately below the number 1 write the letter A. Below the number 2 write out the letter B, and so one through 9. When you reach the letter J, place it in the first column under the letter A. Place the letter K in the second column and so on. The letter S should be placed in the first column under the letter J. The letter Z should end the alphabet and appear in the eighth column. Please make your own chart and then check your work below... |
