Sketch for "Starry Night", Saint-Rémy: June, 1889
Vincent van Gogh

Any drawing leaves a visible record on the paper of the artist's hand's movements, pressures and hesitations.  The trace of this kinetic energy is encoded in the marks on the surface of the paper.  The expression of energy accumulates as the artist invests time and movement  in the drawing. A sustained gesture drawing displays a considerable amount of this time and energy. Although it is possible for sustained gesture to be effected without line, most are linear.
It is essential that the lines remain crisp and distinct so that the energy of each is apparent. Areas of low value (shading) provide opportunity for lots of lines to be massed serving both to model the forms and sustain the gesture.
