Course Information

Course Description

This class if a full-term class and will have lessons posted bi-weekly. The course will run over three months each term and will have two mid-terms and one final.

Lesson Plan for September (2005) - June(2006)

IMPORTANT!!! PLEASE SEE MY GRADING SYSTEM BEFORE READING ANY FURTHER.

Prerequisites

To take Arithmancy 101 you do not have to take no other course in order to take it. However, in order to take Arithmancy 102 (hopefully given next year), you will have to have taken Arithmancy 101.

Activity

Staying Active

You must remain an active member to pass the class. If you miss a month's worth of work without a liable excuse you will most likely be dropped from the class. I will e-mail you about your absence before taking action.

I will count you inactive if you do not come to the first two lessons. Homework is a requirement for this class and if you do not complete it I will deduct house points from your house. Lesson 1 in the first term doesn't count towards the house point deduction. If you do not submit homework for the first lesson, you will be counted in active. If the second lesson is missed you will be dropped. If you e-mail me with an excuse as to why you didn't send in your homework you may do so and send in your homework for a late grade and redeem your active status. As I said, I will e-mail you before taking action on dropping.

Dropping The Class

If you wish to drop the class, go right ahead. I don't mind as long as you have another class you can use to graduate the year with. Just e-mail me telling me you want to be dropped and I'll do it. Just make sure to give me the reason while your doing so.

Passing the Class & QUILLs

In order to pass the class you must earn 2 out of 3 QUILLs and complete the final exam with at least an "A" or better.

In order to get your QUILLs you will basically need to pass each term with an "A" or better better also, and this includes the Mid-Terms I give.

Breakdown of QUILLs:
First Term: Completion of 5 homework assignments. Passing the Mid-Term with an "A" or better. Earn 1 QUILL.
Lessons 2-6 will be on the Mid-Term.

Second Term: Completion of 5 homework assignments. Passing the Mid-Term with an "A" or better. Earn 1 QUILL.
Lessons 7-11 will be on the Mid-Term.

Third Term: Completion of 5 homework assignments. Passing the Final with an "A" or better. Earn 1 QUILL.
Lessons 12-16 will be on the Mid-Term.

Total QUILLs Available to be Earned: 3 QUILLs
Total Needed to Pass Class: 2 QUILLs

You MUST earn two QUILLs to past this class in order to go to the next year, especially if this is your only class. So please, pay attention to the requirements. Also, seeing as the assignments are manditory, whatever assignments you do not turn in you will recieve a "T" for that assignment.

Lessons & Assignments

Late Work Policy & Extensions

Late work that is turned in without a valid reason, will be graded, but with two concequences.

  1. The work will not recieve it's available House Points.
  2. The work will have 5 grade points deducted for each day it's late.
I will accept homework after the required due date, but would prefer if it was on time. It is hard grading something with an old Answer Key. If it is, at most, five days late I will not add in the house points, but the grade points will still count towards your QUILL and the Class Cup.

If you think there is a need to extend the due date for you, please e-mail me with a valid reason and I will extend it for you. I will decide whether it is liable or not. If you forget to send your extension request, just put the explanation in the e-mail along with the assignment.

Form for Sending Extension Requests:
HOL Name: Your HOL Name.
HOL ID: Your HOL ID.
Extension: Please put the extension date you would like here. Please do not make it exceed to much over the actual due date. If I think an extension date is too long I will notify you to shorten it to something reasonable, but this is only if I accept the reason for the extension.
Reason: Just put here the reason why you need the extension. Death in the family, family vacation, anything like that is acceptable. However, if I see something I don't think is a liable excuse I won't accept the request.

Due Date Confusion

My due date and time of when the assignment needs to be turned in are all HOL Time. Just check the HOL main page for what date and time it has on there and that is the date and time I go by, whether on the site, forum, etc. Just check there every now and then to make sure a due date isn't coming up or something.

Homework Assignments

Assignment are manditory and are due the day before the next lesson at Midnight HOL Time. The Due date will be specified at the beginning of the assignment and on the website home page. You will have two weeks to complete the assignments given.

Please do your assignments with care. It took me alot of time to make them and you should work hard on them just as much as I did. I will grade the homework whenever I have time and will try to post the grades as soon as I can, along with the points awarded for each lesson. I will announce on the main page when each assignment is due and hope you respect that due date.

Make sure you save the lessons to your computer after I post each one. This is for studying purposes and because when I post tests I always will temporarily take the link to that lecture down so that the test can be taken without cheating.

Assignments will usually be in the following format:
Short Answer Questions - 5 Questions. One or two sentence replies. 4 grade points each, 20 grade points maximum.
Fill-in-the-Blank - 5 Questions. Number of replies vary. 4 grade points each, 20 grade points maximum.
True or False - 5 Questions. One reply per question. 4 grade points each, 20 grade points maximum.
Multiple Choice - 5 Questions. One reply per question. 4 grade points each, 20 grade points maximum.
Essay Question - 1 Question. Essays will always be manditory for homework and will contain and minimum of 10 sentences. Complete all this will end in a maximum 20 grade points, however, the points will vary depending on your answer and how much thought was put into it.

Submitting Assignments
Assignments must be sent to this e-mail address. I would prefer all homework to be attachments, but you can either have the assignment in the body of the e-mail or as an attachment. However, attachments are prefered.

The Subject line must contain one of the following: "Arithmancy Assignment (X)", "September Assignment (X)" or "Lesson (X) Assignment"

Please make sure that your HOL Name and ID are in the attachment AND body of the e-mail if you decide to attach the homework. In the attached document make sure that your HOL Name and ID are at the top. If you wish the put the assignment in the body of the e-mail then the HOL Name and ID MUST be at the top of the assignment, not the bottom.

When you are sending me your assignment as attachments, please make sure they are a word document of some sort. Anything else will not open on my computer or won't allow me to save to my computer. Wordpad or Notepad is prefered because it is garanteed that I have those on my computer. Microsoft Word or any other program I probably don't have, so please send the attachments as Wordpad or Notepad documents.

Extra Credit

Extra Credit is a privilege can be taken away if abused. If your grade has gone down past the 70% (A) mark then you are qualified to ask for Extra Credit. However, the Extra Credit will not be easy, but won't be too hard either. This is to help you bring up your grade if needed, but it will not earn you House Points. It will earn you Grade Points, though, to bring up your grade to something better.

Exams & Tests

Exams (Mid-Terms & Final)

These will determine your "passing" and "failing" of the year. The Mid-Terms determine whether you pass the first two terms and the final will determine the whole year. You must make at least an "A" on all of these in order to pass the entire year.

The Mid-Term Exams will consist of 30 Multiple Choice questions, and each Mid-Term will earn you 30 House Points, if completed. Each question will earn you 90 grade points, 3 points per question. The last 10 grade points will be determined by one short answer question.

The Final will consist of 50 Multiple Choice Questions, and the Final will earn you 50 House Points, if completed. Each question will earn you 100 grade points, 2 points per question.

Tests

Tests are manditory. After every lesson I will give out a small test to see what you have learned. It will mainly be 10 questions, each question being 10 grade points. You will not recieve any House Points for this assignment, but it's always good to see what you know to be ready for the Mid-Terms and/or Final Exam.

The Report

At the beginning of the Second Term I will post that everyone has to do a report. The report will earn you 20 House Points and 100 Grade Points, however, the Grade Points depends on how much work you put into it and if you have the correct data.

This will be posted at the same time as the first lesson of that term and will require you to do research on ONE particular number. I will assign the numbers to everyone and you will need to have at least one or two sources and it must be found with the report when you turn it in.

You have to have a minimum of two paragraph with a minimum of five sentences per paragraph. The Grammer must be good and the information must be correct.

This is how I'm going to grade it:

Grammer - 20 Grade Points
Sources (1 or 2) - 20 Grade Points
Correct Information - 30 Grade Points
Two Paragraphs Minimum - 20 Grade Points
Five Sentences Minimum Per Paragraph - 10 Grade Points

NOTE: I will be the one assigning the numbers. You may use my lessons for help and a source if you want.
