Authorship and Reviewing Practices (35 points) - Group Assignment A Case Study in Research Ethics Professor Babate was Rudyard’s advisor during his undergrad’s degree program at ABC College. As part of his degree requirements, Rudyard completed an undergrad’s thesis. As a rookie researcher, Rudyard needed a lot of guidance. Professor Babate helped Rudyard by offering advice on his research design, assisting Rudyard with the development of a survey instrument, nominating expert reviewers to assess the content validity of the survey instrument, offering advice on the selection of statistical analyses, providing Rudyard with names of people in the community who could provide access to potential subjects, and, of course, editing several drafts of Rudyard’s thesis proposal and completed thesis. Rudyard was accepted to a masteralprogram at XYZ College about midway through his thesis research. His soon-to-be Master's advisor, Prof. Best, insisted that Rudyard complete the undergrad’s degree before beginning the masteral program, so Rudyard was very motivated to complete his remaining courses and his thesis. Rudyard completed his thesis to Professor Babate’s satisfaction in mid-August, two days before he departed for XYZ College. Rudyard was in such a hurry to move that he and Professor Babate never had the opportunity to discuss publication of his thesis research. Within the first few months of Rudyard’s masteral program, Prof. Best insisted that Rudyard submit a paper for publication. Rudyard submitted a single-author (himself) manuscript based upon his undergrad’s thesis to a journal in his field. The journal editor sent the manuscript to Professor Babate for review, not knowing that Rudyard had been Professor Babate’s advisee. Professor Babate recognized that Rudyard was the author of the manuscript despite the journal’s practice of blind reviews. Professor Babate felt that he should have been listed as a second author on the paper. He also recognized a conflict of interest situation with respect to completing the review. What should Professor Babate do?
