Ms. Rowland's Style Sheet for Paperlets

Font: 12 point. Choose from Arial, Times New Roman, Courier, or Garamond.

Double-space entire document.

Upper Left: On the first line, your name. On the next line, class time and days, such as 9 MWF, 9:25 TTh, etc.

Title: In the same font and style as the body of the paper, center the title. No italics, No quote marks around it, No bold face, No underlines. (This is standard style for titles when there is no cover sheet.) And, of course, No cover sheets. They're stupid for a 1-2 page paper.

Just the usual double space to the body of the paper. There should be no extra spaces.

Body: Indent paragraphs-the normal indent is 5 spaces, or one regular tab stop. Do not put any extra spaces between indented paragraphs. Be sure you have widows and orphans on so that you don't have just one line of a paragraph at the end or beginning of a page. (Format, Paragraphs, Line and page breaks, then be sure that "widows and orphans" is checked.)

Save each draft!!!

Proofread a hard copy, rather than just running spell check and screen-proofing.

Always run spell check, but pay attention to the suggestions. Sometimes the word suggested is definitely NOT the word you want.

Proofread again by reading it aloud. Have a friend proofread it.

Page numbers: Since your paperlets will not exceed two pages, don't worry about it. If you feel you absolutely MUST identify yourself on every page, use a header (View, Headers and Footers) with your initials only.

Staple pages together with your own stapler. (The little ones don't cost that much.)

Last, but not least, DO NOT use a cover sheet, or one of those plastic report covers. This is NOT a dissertation, or even a thesis. It's a two-page max essay answer to a question.

General Writing Tips

Write naturally. Use active voice as much as possible. This is where the subject is doing the action. "Several major corporations used creative bookkeeping to overstate their earnings" rather than "Creative bookkeeping was used by several major corporations to overstate their earnings." Active voice sounds a lot more confident.

Don't try to sound super-scholarly by using excessively complex sentences. Be sure you check exact meanings of words not in your common speaking vocabulary.

Don't wait till the last minute! Try to have the final draft of the paper done the night before it is due.

Papers are due by the START of class. Late papers lose four (4) points per Xavier day. A paper that reaches me after class, but on the due date, loses 2 points. If you are turning in a late paper, leave it in my mailbox, but first ask the secretary to initial it and note the date it's turned in. Do not slide papers under my office door. (Another instructor uses this office on Tuesdays and Thursdays.)

These papers will be graded on a 100 point scale. I will grade on content and writing.
