2003 LIFEGUARDING CLASS SCHEDULE
(will be posted by mid-March)

Saturday, May 12:
*At Rowland pool, 35298 Garden Drive. Prerequisite swim test in the afternoon. I will give you an appointed time. Please come ready to swim 500 yards non-stop, with 100 continuous yards each of crawl, breaststroke, and sidestroke. Takes about 20 minutes for students with good strokes.
Tuesday, May 15:
4:30-7ish. Rowland pool. Introductory water skills, surveillance skills, elementary forms of rescue. Class ends when work is done, or people start turning blue. Bring sweats and extra towels. Read Chapters 1, 5, 8.
Wednesday, May 16:
4:30 PM to 7 PM at Red Cross office, 2735 Slidell Ave. (off Old Spanish Trail). Introduction, video, and discussion of Chapters 2, 3, 4, 6, 7.
Thursday, May 17:
*4-7ish, Rowland pool. Water practice on surveillance and rescue skills. Discussion of material in first 8 chapters that we haven't yet covered.
Monday, May 21:
*4:30-7, Red Cross. Community First Aid. Read Chapters 9 and 10 before the class and we can finish up faster.
Tuesday, May 22:
4-7 ish, Rowland pool. Rescue skill praactice; introduction to spinal injury management. Read Chapter 11 about in-line stabilization.
Thursday, May 24:
*4-7ish, Rowland pool. Water practice of spinal injury management in shallow and deep water. Review chapter 11 thoroughly.
Monday May 28 OR Tuesday May 29:
*4-7ish, Rowland pool. Half the class at each session will practice removing a spinal injury victim from both shallow and deep water using the backboard. Review this part of Chapter ll.
Wednesday, May 30:
*4-7ish, Rowland pool. Review and practice of all rescue skills and reading material. Discussion of chapter 12.
Thursday, May 31:
*4-7ish, Rowland pool. Practical exam and written final. Passing grade on 50 question exam on lifeguarding and first aid is 80%.
Friday, June 1:
4 PM, Rowland pool. Retake of written exams for those who failed the first time. Exams can be retaken only once.
CPR for PROFESSIONAL RESCUER
Sunday May 20:
*8:30 AM to 5 PM at the Red Cross office, 2735 Slidell Avenue. This is one of the requirements for Lifeguarding certification. Read the text and review the questions at the end of the chapters before class. You must pass a 50 question exam with at least an 80% grade. session.
