Position Paper Drafting

Evaluator, read the entire rough draft carefully and then answer the following questions.

  1. What exactly is the issue that writer is discussing? Does the writer make it clear what the paper is about?
  2.  

     

  3. Does the paper have a narrow scope? Is there any lower denominator that the writer could go to and still write this paper? What is it?
  4.  

     

     

  5. Is the writer’s opinion on this issue clear? Do they see the issue as a problem that needs to be solved? How could they make it more urgent?
  6.  

     

     

  7. Is the argument well organized? How could they break it down even more to make it step-by-step?
  8.  

     

     

  9. Does they writer give sufficient reasons for the position taken? Which one of these reasons need to be fact rather than opinion?

 

 

 

 

6.) Are the facts well documented? How? Is that the way the professor will want it?

 

 

 

  1. Do the facts come from recognized authorities? How could the writer use the sources to make the position look like a well thought out argument rather than ranting or complaining?

8.) Does the writer use counterarguing effectively. Circle the tact that the writer uses too much of: (acknowledging – accommodating – refuting)

 

 

 

  1. Which direct quotes work the best for you. Where could direct quotes be added to make the paper seem better supported?

  3. Can you clearly understand the examples given. Where do they need more or better examples?
  4.  

     

     

  5. Where the comparison/contrast and the cause/effect statements effective. Note them on the paper. How could more such statements lend credence to the position statement? What might some possible statements be?

  7. Are the terms all clearly defined and classified. Could you explain them all to someone else? What would you need to know to do so? Would synonyms help with the problem?

  9. Does the writer keep an active narrative voice? How could a change in tone help? Would an anecdote be useful?

  11. Most important question: Are you 100% convinced? What do you need as a person to by into what the writer is saying?

 

 

15.) Write down one word that describes how do you feel, right now, after reading this paper. Not how you felt about the paper, but how the paper made you feel.
