Descriptive Drafting
Evaluator, read the entire rough draft carefully and then answer the following questions.
- Is the organization topical or chronological? Would either form work? What would be the effect of using the other form?
- Does the writer include a great number of modifiers (adjectives and adverbs) in each sentence? Where are the lacking some of this essential detailing?
- Are the writer’s modifiers strong and concise, or do they use words like "good, big, nice, etc) a lot? Which words do you think need to be changed? Which one’s are used too much?
- Are there several examples of figurative language in the essay, especially simile and metaphor? What are they? Where might it be effective to use them in the essay?
- How often does the writer use quotes? Are they direct? How would they be better if they were direct? What might you learn about the people and place being described if they were direct?
- Are all five forms of imagery used regularly? Which one is lacking. Either in number or altogether? Where and how could more examples of this be used?
- Is the subject narrow enough that the writer has to go into great description. How could they narrow this topic even more?
- Do you come away with a clear, dominant impression? Can you clearly picture this person, place, or activity in your mind? What this still missing to complete your mental picture. What things did you have to add that weren’t already there to form a mental image?
- Does the writer have a clear attitude towards the subject, or are they merely narrating? What is that attitude? Does it affect the tone of the paper. Do you find that to be a good or bad thing?
- Does the writer give you enough information? What parts don’t substantially contribute
to the dominate impression?
- Does the writer use enough narration to develop a basic plot line? Identify the five parts
in this essay.
- What parts drew you into the essay? What about them drew you in? How could this be
used throughout the essay?
- What parts dragged for you? Why? How can you fix them?
- What stylistic device did you learn reading this essay? How could you use this in your
essay?
