The crime scene looked simple enough; jealous brother, Rick Davenport, walks in to find his sister, Amanda Davenport, sleeping with his best friend Josh, and kills them both. Except for two faults which Goren spots; mismatched blood splatter and peas from one of the victims gut lined up on the floor, a habit of someone whos been institutionalised.

Their attention turns towards the stepmother, whose motive for wanting Rick and Amanda dead would be the considerable amount of money from her husbands business that would be directed to her real daughter, Lucy, if his current kids died.

Tracking down a nanny whod filed an assault complaint against the Davenports, the detectives learn about the stepmothers dislike of Rick and Amanda and bring her in for questioning, during which they learn that the nanny who filed the assault had wanted a raise and had found out that forcing her to sleep in the childs room was a violation of labour laws. But Goren wonders how she came across this knowledge. They also discover that one of the victims had left his pills out for Lucy to find.

The body of the brother is found and Rogers determines that he had died of autoerotic asphyxiation. But what gets Goren is that there were no traces of drugs in his system, meaning he wasnt taking drugs. So who left the pills out for the five year old to find?

When asked, the ex-nanny points them in the direction of Hannah Price, a nanny who worked next door. But when questioned about Hannah, her employer gives them nothing but high praises of Hannah, and they realize in order to get a feel of Hannah, they have to talk to her face to face.

Catching her alone just as shes coming back from the park, the detectives offer to help her fix lunch. She agrees and Goren sees his chance, accidentally spilling a couple of corn kernels, they realize theyve got their killer when she leaves the kitchen and the detectives discover she had arranged them in a straight line, just like the peas at the crime scene.

Suspecting that Hannah Price was from Pennsylvania from her accent, they find out she had a juvenile record thats sealed and that she may have been institutionalised. But without enough evidence to get it unsealed the detectives get creative, passing themselves off as a couple concerned for a relatives welfare, they ask the institution about Hannah, who they discover is also linked to Sarah Eldon, the current nanny working for the Davenports. The last name Eldon leads the detectives to her adoptive parents, whom Sarah had just sent a pair of stolen cufflinks to her father.

Getting a search warrant for Hannah Prices room, they find all the missing stuff from the Davenports apartment. But whats even more disturbing is that the recent events were all copied off a soap opera and manipulated into real life by Hannah and Sarah.

Talking to the mourning Bill Davenport and his wife, Goren digs deeper into the minds of the nannies and comes up with a plan to turn the girls against eachother. With the help of Carver the girls are assigned one of the worst pro bono lawyers in the city and in the interrogation room the games begin. Laying out the foundations, the detectives and Carver try unsuccessfully turning Sarah against Hannah. Sarah sticks up for her sister, but little does she know shes played right into their hands.

But things seem to be going their way when a sharp lawyer turns up and represents Sarah, filing for a motion of severance while the worst pro bono lawyer is assigned to Hannah, who is outraged by this action.

In temporary lock-up, and no doubt done on purpose, Hannah watches helplessly as her sister is helped through the motions so she can be released on bail. Goren uses this opportunity to push Hannah, focusing on the unfairness of the situation and, in a flash of anger and desperation, Hannah turns on her sister, admitting that Sarah helped Hannah kill Rick, Amanda and Josh.
