When the church Sexton is murdered late at night while closing up, they begin at the crime scene, where Goren notices the killer took his time picking up the money after stabbing the sexton several times with a broken bottle.
Informed of a scuffle between the Sexton and two church workers, they set out to find Howard, an unstable and homeless man who was involved in the scuffle. From his homeless friends to a medical clinic, they quickly track Howard down and interrogate him, only to find him unstable and unorganized enough to commit murder. But their focus shifts on Kevin Donovan, the second worker involved in the scuffle.
From the police records, they track down a guy who use to live in the same foster home as Kevin, only to find out that it was an alias used by another kid to cover up his identity, Chiggy Rios.
Rocking up at Chiggy's place, arcade tokens in Chiggy's pockets leads them to arrest Kevin. But Kevin is a hard one to break, so they decide to break Chiggy, who admits that Kevin iced someone.
But turning up to arrest Kevin, they find him dead. The religious significance of Oil on Kevin's skin leads Goren to suspect a priest at the church and they subpoena the church financial records in an attempt to find out who was stealing from the church.
Arresting father McShane for Kevin's murder, his attorney wants to apply a battered spouse defence for Kevin's constant physical abuse of McShane because they were lovers.
But more digging brings up a connection between Kevin and McShane; Melanie Grasso. Talking to Mrs Grasso, the detectives learn the secret that McShane had been keeping all these years; McShane and Grasso had had an inappropriate relationship during her time at St Justins and Grasso had gotten pregnant and Kevin was the product.
With that evidence in hand, Carver had the case in the bag. But Goren's concern that asking Melanie to testify would ruin the life she had made for herself; a home in a quiet place and a beautiful family.
Goren takes things into his own hands and talks to McShane in lock-up, using Grasso to force him to take a plea and gets his ass chewed off by Carver for doing it
