"Well, I don't know your name," Cam told the extremely relaxed kitten. "So I guess we'll just have to come up with one for you."
The cat started to purr, and he reached out to stroke the soft fur on her head. "You should know that I'm not going to call you Tigger. Or Woz. Both very good names, but they've been done."
He paused, then added, "And I guess 'Finny' isn't really appropriate. 'Hunter' is taken... ow!"
He glared down at the little cat, whose purr disguised a set of very sharp teeth. "No gratitude," he muttered.
"I came here because my presence was requested," Hiro said calmly. "It seemed there was a great battle? An heirloom was lost?"
Cam blinked. "Mother's necklace was lost a few months ago. How did you know?"
"Has the amulet never seemed more to you than a source of power? Have you never felt any... deeper connection to it?"
Cam was silent for a moment. "No," he said at last.
"You mentioned that it was subject to unpredictable temperature changes," his father reminded him. "We speculated that it might react to your perception of good and evil."
"Oh?" Hiro inquired. "Is this true?"
Cam shifted uncomfortably. "Well... it froze, once, when it was near... something bad."
"Yes," the elder man agreed. "It would. No doubt it also became warm when subject to something you considered particularly good or pleasing."
He didn't have to crane his neck to know that somewhere just outside of camera range, Hunter was smirking in that infuriating way he had. "I wouldn't know," Cam said stiffly.
"Sounds like your grandfather really has you riled," Hunter offered.
"Yeah," Cam said with a sigh. "He's just full of advice and knowledge."
"I guess it runs in the family," Hunter remarked.
"He knows I'm a samurai--"
"Oh, is that on the DL now?" Hunter interrupted.
"He wants to train me," Cam said, fixing a glare on Hunter. "And he wants me to socialize more. Not with ninja."
Hunter mimed being stabbed in the heart. "No one appreciates me around here, no one! I can't take it anymore!"
Cam tried to keep a straight face by glaring harder. He failed. "You know, you're not helping here," he complained.
"Cameron, I wish to continue your training in the arts of the Samurai."
Cam bowed carefully. "That would be an honor, grandfather."
"So you will return with me to Japan and complete your training."
"Over my dead body," Sensei commented. He only smiled when they both turned to look at him. "I'm sorry. Perhaps we should try that again."
