BioEthics Interest Group

The BioEthics Interest Group focuses on issues in science and medicine which concern both current and future physicians. As a student oriented group, the format and topics covered come from what medical students find important--whether in the news, in the hospital, or in class. Past events have included guest lecturers from the hospital and ethics department as well as small group discussions among students. Any interested student is more than welcome to attend the events and to help with the group management. We hope to continue and build on past works in this upcoming year.

APAMSA - Asian Pacific American Medical Students Association

Ever been interested in issues regarding the Asian/APIA community? Have you thought about Eastern/Western medicine? Are you interested in communication between Asian Americans and society? Ever worked with an Asian American group?

If so, please come to an APAMSA meeting - we'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas. We're a growing organization - very flexible and open to any programs you may have. Whether you're interested in the medical, political, or social aspects of Asian American issues, we'd love to get to know you and act as an additional support group. Keep an eye out for us during Orientation, and if you're interested in the group, please contact Suzan Song at [email protected]. Looking forward to meeting you!

AMWA

The Pritzker chapter of AMWA has the following objectives:

-To support the efforts of women in medicine

-To provide a source of mentoring and networking for medical students

-To promote the advancement and understanding of women's health issues

Our activities include brownbag lunches with women physicians as well as lectures exploring the issues that affect women in medicine. Similarly, we are a vital source of women physician mentors for medical students. Other AMWA events include a panel discussion of physicians, residents, and medical students on balancing careers with family, a self-defense workshop, and a variety of speakers examining women's issues in medicine.

IMG

IMG is an organization aimed at increasing awareness of international health issues and serves as a guide for international health opportunities. We hold numerous talks during the school year and support international health projects through the Keith Edson Scholarship. Remedy is an organization devoted to bringing much needed medical supplies to developing nations. Throughout the year, we collect surplus medical supplies from the U o C hospitals which are delived to various Latin American countries. The Cuba Medical Aid Mission is now a part of Remedy. Last year, 10 first years and 4 second years collected over $60,000 worth of medical supplies to bring to various hospitals and clinics in Havana, Cuba. We also learned about the Cuban healthcare system and its political history. Say Ahhh

"SayAhh"--The official a cappella group of Pritzker Medical

School. It is made up of 11 members (5 guys and 6 girls)--all medical students--who like to get together and sing and sometimes perform for hospital or medical school events. It is a great way to keep sane during the rigors of medical school. We sing all types of songs and usually rehearse once a week. Whether you have sung in an a cappella group before or just like to sing for fun, we are looking for both men and women to audition for next year's group. More information will be provided during the o-week activities fair scheduled for September 20.

Medical Students for Choice

We are a student group who believes in a woman's right to choose and is working towards maintaining the legality of the right to choose. Our goal is to increase education and awareness in areas such as contraception, abortion legislation, abortion procedures, and provider violence. We run a shadowing program at a local clinic to allow students to see the procedure, as well as the environment women may encounter if they choose to have such procedure. We also sponsor speakers on a variety of topics to provide additional information than what is seen in coursework. We will have a booth at the activities fair, so please stop by if you are interested in our group.

Washington Park Clinic

The Washington Park clinic is a wonderful way for medical students to learn about caring for the 'underserved' while giving back to the community at the same time. Located in a neighborhood just adjacent to Hyde Park, this clinic serves all children under age 18, providing free vaccinations, school physicals and referrals to permanent sources of health care. Medical Students team up with students from the School of Social Service Administration and voluntary pediatricians from the University of Chicago Children's Hospital every Thursday from 5:30PM until 7:30PM. Sign up sheets for volunteer times will be passed around as soon as classes begin, and positions for more active roles (such as referrals, publicity, fundraising) will be offered as the year progresses. Please feel free to contact Joyce ([email protected]), Chris ([email protected]) or Nisha ([email protected]) with any questions.
