1. Who answered the survey?

41 out of the 104 first-years answered this survey.  51% were female and 49% were male.

 

  1. Is everyone 22, right out of college and single?

Well, the average age of those who answered the survey is 24.  and 75% of the respondents were between 20-25.  53% of us took some time off between college and entering Pritzker.  61% of first years are single, 17% are “attached” and 22% are married.

 

  1. What did they do during their time between starting Pritzker and college?

10% of us have another graduate degree.  Of those who responded, this included 3 M.S. degrees and 1 PhD.  Those that took time off did a variety of things:  worked for a non-profit and internet startup, had a career in journalism, did research in a nuerobiology lab, Air Force Officer, tutored, freelance journalis, technical director of a theater, did neurology research, psychiatric partial hospitalization program internship, worked for a consumer finance corporation, worked and went to graduate school, taught college biology labs and studied in the Dominican Republic, worked as a counselor with homeless women, did research on mental health and substance abuse treatment services, did management consulting, went to graduate school, worked as a foreign correspondent in Africa and China, taught, did research, got an MBA and worked, worked for Parke-Davis Pharmeceuticals, computer instructor, did research and got married, legal research specialist, did behavioral science research at UCSF and volunteered as an HIV test counselor.

 

  1.  Does everyone live in Hyde Park with fellow medical students?

85% of us live in Hyde Park.  24% of us live with other medical students, 46% of us live with roommates who are not medical students and another 30% of us live alone.

 

  1. Do I need a car or a computer?

75% of us have a car and 93% of us have a computer with us at Pritzker.

 

  1. Was everyone a science major and brilliant?

Well, 73% of us were biological science majors and 41% of us speak another language fluently.  26% of us were in a sorority/fraternity in college.

 

  1. What will first year be like?

The top three favorite courses were Physiology, then electives and Neuroanatomy.  About 54% of us say we attended 75% of all the coursese and another 46% of us say we attended all of the lectures.  But 56% of us admit to falling asleep at some point in lecture.  And 71% of us took biochemistry, with the rest testing out.  Check out the section on biochemistry to find out what options you have if you pass the biochemistry placement exam.

 

  1. Does everyone study all the time?

The average hours studied per week is 17.2 hours, with the range given being 0-50 hours.  49% of us like to study from home and another 44% say the library is the favorite place to study.  But on average, we still get at least 7 hours of sleep per night!

 

  1. Do we have time to do other things?

Definitely!

  1. Does everyone stay in Chicago to do research after first year?

Only 60% of us are staying in Chicago to do research but another 13% of us are staying in Chicago this summer to pursue other activities.

 

  1. Will I ever remember everyone’s names?

At this point, 76% of us say we could name everyone in our class and another 20% say that we could name 3/4 of our classmates.

 

  1. Is it safe in Hyde Park?

While only 5% of us always feel safe in Hyde Park, 93% of us feel safe “most of the time.”

 

  1. Will I be happy in Hyde Park and at Pritzker?

95% of us say that we are happy here.  Over 50% of respondents said that the BEST thing about Pritzker was our classmates.  The administration, the Pass/Fail system, and Hyde Park were other answers given.
