Dear Future Physician,
Let us, your Orientation Co-Chairs, be among the first to congratulate
you on your acceptance at one of the finest medical schools in the
country - the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine!
Now is perhaps one of the more exciting times in your life. The is a
great sense of accomplishment (well deserved!) as well as a certain
security in knowing at least in part your course for the next few years.
There is also a great anticipation for new experiences to come. The
entrance to medical school is a profound passage - the first day of gross
anatomy, learning the secrets of human physiology, speaking to patients
about their hopes and fears, histories and futures - you are beginning a
marvelous journey, and one that will take you to the fulfillment of
many dreams.
Helping you begin this journey is where we come in. Our classmates
elected us to head up the Orientation Committee, a committee made entirely
of the first-year (soon to be second-year!) students dedicated to
ensuring you the best possible start to medical school and introducing you
to the calling and profession of medicine. Over the next few months you
will receive communication from us as well as from many of our
classmates also involved in your orientation.
You will very soon be receiving information about housing and health
insurance, as well as information about the White Coat Ceremony, a
tradition in fact founded at the U of C. During this hallowed ceremony you
will be welcomed to the profession, presented with your long, white coat
embroidered with the University of Chicago Crest, and asked to recite
along side your fellow classmates and faculty the Oath of Hippocrates.
This ceremony takes place the first night of orientation, on Sunday,
September 16th. More detailed information will be in your mailing. In the
mean time, if you have any questions, concerns, or thoughts whatsoever,
please do not hesitate to contact either of us via email or phone or
singing telegram. Our contact information is below the byline.
All of us in the first-year class are committed to creating an
orientation that was as fun and helpful and important as was our orientation
(gosh, maybe even more so). We wish you the best of luck in your summer
endeavors and once again congratulations on your outstanding
achievement!
Yours,
Alex Langerman Jen Gnerlich
