Born into a culture thats worldwide emulated and simultaneously hated
Stolen from a rich heritage of proud people
Even the smartest, some debated
To be brought to a place corrupt and evil
On bended knees we built an empire
Bullied and hazed we slowly flamed Americas fire
Mournful songs--- secret passages held
About Harriets Passage--- the way so many fled

From bloodied backs and broken necks
Weve risen
From battered spirits and raped women
Weve risen
They tried to take our lives
But weve surely survived

And now

We take global positions, from the White House to your house
Television, radio
From Oprah to Tom Joyners Show

Weve taken over

No longer accepted by many of our
Deep ancestral history bearers
And hated by those who stole us
We create a new home

We are the millions, a new race that is
Strong enough to acknowledge what we are,
Accept what we come from and
Applaud where we are going

We dance, sing, politic and make the world stand up and notice
We are African Americans
We have taken the worst; made it the best and now they imitate us.

This is my culture.
