Salsa is the musical movement that was generated and had its origins in New York. Through out a fusion of different musical flows such as "El Guanguajo", "La Guajira", "El Son o Mambo". Nevertheless, musically speaking, it begins to flourish in Puerto Rico due to quality of its musicians.  Their contributions to the creation of the salsa was  basically fundamental

Salsa was born in New York in the 60's, and it was expanded throughout Latin-America with an incredible musical fierce.  However in each country salsa takes its own characteristic according to the idiosyncrasy of each country.

All the musical currents previous to salsa had a common denominator --"La Clave".  Basic element that with the passage of time will defined what was called Salsa.   All this musical flows utilized "La Clave".  Of course, each with a determined  rhythm.  For example, if the rhythm of  "La Clave" is slow, it is called Guajira, if it is fast is Mambo.  Basically they sound alike and they are only differentiated in the speed of their rhythm.

Salsa has the musical contribution of different instruments of Europe, Africa, India, America.  From Africa --La Conga--; From Spain --the guitar, the maracas, and  the lirics; From America the wind instruments such as the --trumpets, the "trombones" and the flutes, as well as the piano and percussion instruments.  In other words, different custom roots. 

All this musical instruments fused to the rhythm of  "La Clave" which is the became the basic structure of the Salsa.  Giving salsa an exclusive touch and mixture of essence and animation.  La Conga is another musical element that jointly with the bass reinforce the Afro-Latin-American rhythm of Salsa.

It could be said that the lirics of the Salsa had changed or had a transcendental turned from its beginnings.  The same it is noticed in the used of its instruments.  Thus modern instruments such as the Saxophone and the keyboard are widely used.  Salsa fuses the feelings of the people.  Thus, Salsa throughout its words and its music will have these. feelings expressed.
