The West Wing My Way
Chapter One
This story tells the story of CJ and Toby, filling in all the details the wonderful Aaron Sorking and TPTB at Warner Bros. leave out. It starts at the beginning of the Bartlet campaign and I'm not yet sure where it ends.
She steps out of the taxin at the curb and is suprised to see a rental car parked in her driveway. This is turning out to be the worst day CJ Cregg has had to endure this years, and she really isn't up for company. She walks through the back gate and calls out to her visitor, whom she still cannot see because she couldn't get her contacts in and she broke her glasses while getting out of her car.
"Hello?" She scans her backyard, looking for her visitor, although there is no point to her scan. Unless her visitor is standing three feet in front of her, she would never see him or her. "Hey, CJ," a strangely familiar voice calls out. "Who is that?" The only response her visitor offers is, "It's me." She squints and can make out a fuzzy shape with a bald head. "Toby?" Her visitor waves, "Yeah."
"What the hell are you--" She doesn't have the chance to ask him why he's in her backyard; she's fallen into her own pool! Of all the days she could call into her pool, fate had to chose the day she loses her job and the day Tobias Zachary Zeigler shows up on her doorstep. "CJ, you fell into the pool, there." She can tell he's trying not to laugh at the sight of her looking like a drowned rat in the middle of her own backyard.
He even humors her by averting his eyes as she steps from the pool and adjusts her clothes. CJ is both shocked and amazed at his reasons for being in California. He's asking her to help Josiah Bartlet run for president. He flatters her and insults her in the same conversation; she's missed his unique mannerisms.
She invites Toby into her house, and she dresses in her bathroom as he lies on her bed telling her about the other members of the campaign staff and the candidate himself. She agrees to join him in New Hampshire after making him buy her lunch. She looks around the house, something that is too flashy and large for her tastes, and is shocked to realize that she's not all that nervous about leaving her old life behing to join Toby on yet another campaign. She can't help but think, as she walks out of her house for the last time, that she's putting a lot of faith in a friendship that started almost twenty years ago.
** Twenty Years Ago **
Toby Zeigler surveys the crowd gathered in his Grorgetown apartment. Andi had begged him to host the part and, since his apartment will be half hers pretty soon, he'd agreed. He regrets his decision now, though, because he's feeling out of place in his own apartment. Andi is running a campaign for a Senator, and this is one of the many fundraising functions he's expected to attend as her fiancee.
Toby is in his late twenties, with a beard and an already receding hairline. His plate is full of food, which saves him from braving the crowd of rich democrats surrounding the buffet tables. He's searching the room for a familiar face, but the only one he sees is his fiancee. Andi wouldn't speak to him if he approached her; she's in work mode now and will be like that until the election results come in, a few months from now. He turns his attention to his plate, trying to decide if the crab puff taunting him is worth setting down his whisket, when a hand snakes over and grabs it off his plate.
He looks over at the theif, ready to explain the "possession is nine-tenths of the law" thing and tear the perpetrator a new one, when he gets a good look at her. She is tall, six feet at least, when a brown hair and the most enchanting eyes he has ever seen. "Can I help you? It takes her a moment to realize he's speaking to her. She swallows her last bite of his food and gives him a sheepigh look. "I'm sorry. There are so many people out for blood around the buffrt tables, and you weren't eating it. Do you mind sharing?" She smiles at him and that is it. He tries not to let it show, but her smile makes his knees go weak and he has to concentrate on standing upright. He shakes his head and laughs, handing her the plate. "I'm CJ, by the way. CJ Cregg." He shakes her hand. "Toby Zeigler."
