The West Wing My Way
Chapter Five
Toby can tell that CJ is nervous about meeting Jed Bartlet, and it shocks him. He's never seen her this nervous about meeting anyone. CJ is on a first name basis with many of Hollywood's biggest stars, and she's nervous about meeting the Governor of New Hampshire. Toby understands, though, after he thinks about it. She was putting her faith in their friendship when she got on the plane, but now that faith lies in the hands of a candidate she's never even met. Toby watches her take a deep breath before she follows him into the storefront that is acting as the Bartlet for America headquarters.
"Hey, Toby! Sleepin' in, huh?" Toby glares at Josh. "Yeah, like getting three hours of sleep is sleeping in!" CJ clears her throat and looks expectantly at Toby. "Right. Josh, this is CJ Cregg. CJ, Joshua Lyman." Josh shakes CJ's hand. "CJ, I've heard of you! You ran a few Senate races in California with EMILY's List, right?" CJ nods. "Yeah, but that was a while ago. I've been working in PR for the last few years. I thought you were working for John Hoynes." Josh shakes his head. "I joined Bartlet for America."
Sam Seaborn walks through the front door. "Josh, when are Toby and--" Sam had just gotten a good look at CJ's legs. "Um, hi. I'm Sam Seaborn." CJ extends her hand and smiles at him. "I'm up here, and I'm CJ Cregg." He tears his eyes away from her legs to look her in the eyes and starts walking to his desk, trying to focus anywhere but her smile. He turns back to smile at her as he reaches his desk and trips over an open file drawer. The papers in his hand scatter over the floor. Leo walks in as everyone laughs at Sam and CJ freezes. "Sam, were you sleep walking again?" Sam gathers his papers and points at CJ. "No, I...she..uh..." Leo walks over to CJ and extends his hand. "CJ, welcome to the club. I'm--" CJ interupts him. "Leo McGarry. I'm a huge, um, fan of yours. It's an honor to meet you." Leo turns to everyone when he drops CJ's hand. "Okay, the Governor is on his way. Everyone look busy. "Too late, Leo."
CJ turns to face the new voice; it is Josiah Bartlet himself. Jed looks at Sam, who's still trying to collect his things from the floor. "Leo, was he sleep walking again?" Leo laughs. "I think so, Governor. Governor Bartlet, this is CJ Cregg, the newest addition to Bartlet for America."

CJ's heart breaks when she reads Toby's second letter. He wrote to fill her in on all of the wedding details. He invites her to the wedding, never mentioning the fact that Andi didn't want her there. She agrees to go, and breaks his heart in her sceond letter, promising to bring a photographer friend of hers to capture the day on film.
His heart breaks again when she comes to the wedding on the arms of her photographer a few months later. Her gift at the reception is too much, and she smiles too large to be truly happy for Toby and Andi. She smiles uncomfortable as she hugs Andi, and hugs Toby a little to long for Andi's liking. He eyes had lost the sparkle that he remember from when they first met, and from the time they had dinner when he was in California on business a few weeks ago. Toby is sad when he sees that she drank too much, and when she leaves the reception with his Best Man, Tim.
When CJ sends Toby the wedding pictures, there are no pictures of her. She'd taken them all out, not wanting there be be any record of her attendance. Andi doesn't notice the fact that there are no pictures of CJ, and if she does, she doesn't mention it to Toby. Neither CJ nor Toby write for a while.
