Guilty Yet Innocent
Chapter Two
CJ had been sitting in her car in front of Toby's apartment for ten minutes by the time he taps on her window. She jumps and turns to look at him and wishes she hadn't. She can tell in his eyes that something is up. She could tell on the phone, too, because he wouldn't talk to her, especially not on an unsecured phone line. She opens the door and is more worried than ever when he takes her hand and leads her into his apartment. A knot forms in the pit of her stomach when she sees an unopened bottle of scotch and two glasses sitting on the coffee table. "Have a seat. I need to talk to you." CJ takes a seat on the couch and Toby sits beside her, opening the bottle and pouring them each a glass. This is not going to be good.

Toby and CJ are sitting in a bar in DC. Jim just lost the election, just as Toby knew he would. But CJ had been amazing. In the few short weeks she had been working on the campaign, the numbers had gotten higher than Toby had ever thought possible. Even that hadn't helped, though, and so here they sit, drowning their sorrows and getting to know each other over the best scotch in the city. He talks her into following him to another campaign, almost convinced that with her on an entire campaign, they couldn't possible lose. They have become quite close in the few short weeks they have known each other. Friends even. CJ wants more than just Toby's friendship, but she isn't so naive to know that it would look back if she were dating a co-worker who had gotten her a job at another campaign. What she doesn't know is that Toby wants something more, too. He will never tell her because he known that it would look bad in the papters. So they laugh and talk like friends and ignore the elephant in the room that is their desire for the other.
