| ...avoid stress by not taking the girl's word for their measurements. The bridesmaid who told me she was a size 8 was a size 12 in the sewing world (as opposed to ready-to-wear). Carry a tape measure with you at all times! Also buy a lot more fabric than you think you'll need (Murphy's law). It only took me about 8 hour a piece to make each of these bridesmaids dresses. They were copies of a Laura Ashley dress that was way out of everyone's budget. By going to a discount fabric source that wasn't well known, I was able to copy the look and weight of the dresses for only $25 each (and no, there wasn't any sort of pattern for the dress at the time!). The retail price of the original was over $100. My own dress has a lot of hand embroidered detail, especially on the back that you just can't see in photographs. This was the first time around for me, and although the marriage itself was legally over 12 years ago, I still have this dress. It reminds me of the second act of "Giselle," the costume worn by the Queen of the Willies. As you can see, I was somewhat influenced by Fergie and Andrew's wedding, thus the fresh flower headdress. As I walked up the aisle, I was thinking I looked like a dancer, but I heard a voice call out (in a thick Southern drawl) "Scarlett!!!" BACK |
