Our children are of the feathered, although, two legged kind. We have three Cockatiels, Gilligan, Skipper and Flexi. We also have a Myers Senegal Parrot, Sweetie. Before you ask, let me explain how Gilligan (our oldest) got his name. John was at a gas station in Cerritos that was owned by the family of his friend Doug. If you know anything about Southern California, you've heard about our hot dry Santa Ana winds. Sometimes they're mellow, but other times they could push a small car along. On this particular day, there was a big windstorm. As John and Doug were talking, a little yellow bird flew onto the station property and landed on top of one of the gas pumps. Poor little guy was tuckered out and the guys felt for him. Doug got a box and John picked the little bird up and put him in. The little guy went home and adopted John along with the rest of the family. John decided to name him Gilligan since he found him on an island (gas) during a storm.
Skipper was another stray that was rescued by John. To make a long story short, he was being chased by crows and the rescue involved crossing six lanes of traffic, climbing a block wall and diving into a strangers swimming pool. Jenny McCafferty loaned John an empty acquaium to bring the next little bird home. This poor little guy hadn't eaten in awhile...he polished off two dishes of seeds before he was satiated. Since Gilligan is the pied variety (yellow with lots of gray) and this little guy was almost all yellow with white we thought why not call him Skipper (since the Skipper looked to be blonde) and Skipper he's been for the last three or four years.
We got Flexi and Sweetie pre named from the Rosiques as they spent so much time out of town that they wanted their birds to be in a place where people were home more often. They figured anyone who has professional portraits taken of their birds must be good pet parents. Here are some pics of our babies. More will be added as we get them developed. |
