"In the Spotlight"
fiatlux

This came from days of reflecting on Xander’s speech in “Potential” and all the conversation it inspired. It is dedicated to everyone who has found themselves in the spotlight, like it or not.

The glare of the spotlight is harsh, blinding
It draws attention to every imperfection, mistake, and shortcoming
It is always with you, watching, waiting.
You can’t escape it; you can’t reason with it; you can’t make it go away

And maybe you don’t want to.

Because in the spotlight, there is warmth
Even when you can’t see, you can be seen
Your words and actions are always heard;
And even the boo’s and hisses prove that you are alive.

"Outside the Spotlight"
fiatlux

This came from days of reflecting on Xander’s speech in “Potential” and all the conversation it inspired. It is dedicated to everyone who has felt the pain of being on the edge of the spotlight, but not in it.

Outside the spotlight, you never feel the warmth of its glow
Or hear the roar of the crowd
All your hard work stays hidden in the dark,
unnoticed, unseen

It hurts more than
humiliation
or ridicule
or hate

It is the pain of being utterly unnoticed,
Of being part of the world, but never affecting it.

And yet…

Outside the spotlight there is also peace.
The darkness has its own constant presence.
Letting you come and go as you please.

You never have to be seen in such a way that you are
laughed at
or ridiculed
or hated

You borrow the light of the spotlight to do your part,
But no one is depending on you to carry the show.
