Dark-Winged Virtue
daddykat
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Pairing: Spike/Drusilla

Black out of black, you came to me,
In the shadows of that alley, like a dark-winged virtue,
Knowing my heart, bearing the secret key,
To powers of which I'd never dreamt.
The roadmap through principalities and dominions,
Strangely familiar and familiarly strange,
O my angel of the night, my guide,
To the glowing darkness which is now my home,
When you arrived, you spoke of light.
But did you see something more ?
You saw it was the dream I had,
Did you also spy your light in me ?
The sole effulgence left for you,
In an existence without day,
Without warmth, yet never touched by the cold.
We are the flames for each other,
In the depth of our always-night,
The heat for our motion,
The light on our way,
Endlessly walking, road without end....

Author's Notes: Yes, I enjoy feedback, on this or my other pieces.
I admit to actually hating the pre-chip Spike, but I
always had a soft spot for his relationship with Dru when I thought of
them together. There was a kind of terrifying sweetness to them, and as
open as I've become to Spuffy lately, I don't think he's quite finished
with his first love, at least in some way.
I see this as something Spike might have written
sometime in the early years of the relationship.(I figure dying might have
improved his skills as a poet as well as his social life.) In traditional
medieval angelology, Virtues were an intermediate rank of angels,
Powers being the next higher order, then Principalities, then Dominions,
etc. This is the sort of thing educated people still knew in William's day
so the images would have been familiar to any hypothetical contemporary
reader. Note that I don't see Drusilla as representing a rebel Virtue
which shared in Satan's fall and came to William out of the Inferno. I
see her as, heretical as this may be, representing a Virtue who hails
from a very, very dark corner of Heaven; take that how you wish.
Spelling "always-night" as as a hyphenated word instead
of two words comes from, of all places, an old "Doc Savage" novel.
