| Chapter 23 All four exploded off the starting line, Rusty taking the early lead, while Apolo was close behind him. Kylee and Karen weren't too far behind them either. The turned the first corner onto the straight away, the first chance the ladies had of passing Apolo. It wasn't as easy as it had been in the previous races because Apolo was skating on the outside while Rusty was skating on the inside. This made it very difficult for the ladies to past Apolo. Then, during the next turn, Apolo passed Rusty and started skating faster as Rusty stayed on his heals. Kylee saw what they were doing and she decided to take things into her own hands. She looked back at Karen and Karen knew what that look meant. Karen moved up to be on the inside while Kylee was on the outside. Then when all four made teh next turn, Kylee and Karen slipped past Apolo and Rusty and took the lead. This made the dancers explode out of their seats aand start cheering for them more louder than ever. Apolo wasn't about to let them win, so when they started lap three he quickly passed Karen. When they were at the straight away, Rusty quickly passed Karen. Now, Kylee had took a trememdous lead; she was almost a quarter lap ahead of the pack. Apolo seeing how far ahead Kylee was accerated as he came around the turn and passed Kylee. Kylee was so determined not to loose that she passed Apolo as soon as Apolo passed her. It was if they were playing musical chairs on ice. On the straight away, Apolo regained his lead with Kylee following close behind. Rusty was right on the heals of Kylee as Karen was right on the heals of Rusty. They came around the last corner, all of them wanting first place. They all wanted that spot so badly and they were going so fast that all four pairs of skates were tangled up. Apolo felt himself being pulled down as did Kylee. Kylee waved out her arms which made Rusty and Karen fall. They all headed towards the mat. They went tumbling and spinning finally stopping when they hit the wall. Everyone gasped. The ladies had been so close. Kylee was the first to hit the mat as Apolo slammed into her right shoulder and the wall. Rusty slammed into Kylee's legs and the wall and Karen slammed into Kylee's stomach. Kylee's helmet flew off as the dancers from the stands ran onto the ice. Karen slowly got up, trying to stabilize herself as Rusty did the same thing. Apolo took a deep breath as he stood up as the dancers asked "Are you all okay?" and "What happened?" and "Does anything hurt?" Kylee was still on the ice on her stomach with her head between the mat and the ice. All three coaches ran onto the ice checking to make sure everyone was okay. Then they looked down at Kylee on the ice. "Kylee are you okay?" Apolo asked helping her sit up. He turned her head towards him when he saw her hands covering her forehead. Between her fingers, red liquid was flowing through them. She had tears in her eyes and she was in pain. "Kylee? Oh my god. Coach!" Apolo and Coach Lisa helped her off the ice. Coach Ellis gave her a towel to try to control the bleeding as the medical technitions arrived. Kylee was still crying, the pain was almost unbearable. "We need to take her to the hospital, she may have a concussion,"' of the medical technitions said helping into a wheelchair. "Out of our way." "Kylee I'll come with you," Coach Lisa said holding her hand as they quickly wheeled her out to the ambulance in the parking lot. "I'll come too," Coach Ellis said following them out to the parking lot. Meanwhile, back inside the oval, everyone was still in shock over what happened. A crew came out to clean up the blood that was left on the ice rink as the dancers and skaters sat their in shock. "I can't believe that happened," Apolo said staring over at where they had crashed. "I have never seen anything like that before." "I hope she's alright," Karen said taking off her helmetas her eyes began to fill with tears. "We shoud have never egged you guys on." "It's no one's fault, it was just an accident," Rusty said trying to comfort her. "I'm going to go change and then go to the hospital," Apolo said getting up to go to the locker room. "We'll come with you," Lindsey said as Karen and Crystal stood up to follow him. "I'll come, too," Rusty said following Lindsey to the locker rooms. They quickly changed and then sped to the hospital where Kylee was in the Emergency Room, getting a CAT scan done. They hoped Kylee would be okay and that nothing would happend to her. When they arrived, Coach Ellis and Coach Lisa were pacing back and forth in the waiting room. They looked at their coaches faces and knew somethng was wrong.
