Once I was young and could run like the wind I could leap oh so high And never tire of the game
I stood watch night and day I barked to keep harm away I gave warning when there was fire And sometimes I barked just for joy

But at last, I grew old and couldn't run so well I could no longer leap and play the game I tried to keep you from seeing me fail But my body was tired and there was pain

My time to leave you has finally come I close my eyes and have no fear In gentle slumber, I slip away The only pain is in your tears
I'm going to be joyful and young again Running and playing as I did yesteryear Please don't be afraid that I've left you alone I'm still standing watch until you are here
