Key Points
The last Shitennou to awaken, Kunzite was first introduced as a human named Shin. Tsukino Usagi and Chiba Mamoru met him after he found Furuhata Motoki's turtle, Kamekichi. Shin lived alone in a very run-down looking house, with no memories and a fear of going outside.
After being awakened by Beryl, Kunzite turned out to be the most cunning of the Shitennou, manipulating both allies and enemies alike. He also turned out to be the most vicious, with the most success at defeating the senshi in battle. One of his main sources of amusement seemed to be provoking Nephrite when left to his own devices, and he frequently showed his disregard for Queen Beryl and her orders.
His first move was to try and turn Sailor Moon into a youma and when that failed, he turned his attentions to Sailor Mercury. His efforts weren't in vain this time, and after exposing Ami to the power of Metallia, she became Dark Mercury. He seemed quite fond of his new pet, but she seemed to have developed her own disregard for authority.
Kunzite was also the first to realize that Sailor Venus was not truly the Princess, and because of Zoisite's attempts to bring back his memories, Kunzite remembered Endymion and what he did as well. As a result, Kunzite made it his mission to get revenge on the Prince who he felt threw away the planet for Serenity.
