I threw the stick, and watched Bear chase after it, through the green, rolling hills. Her coat glistened in the late afternoon sunshine. She came trotting back, the stick secured tightly in her mouth. I laughed, and she dropped the stick at my feet, while a happy doggy grin spread across her face.

I looked up, and the sky had turned purple, with black clouds. At first, I thought I was on an alien planet, but then I realized that it was nothing as exotic as mind control or abduction; I was simply having a dream.

The clouds around me swirled, and Bear ran off. Lightening forked through the air, leaving the raw, acrid scent of electricity. The ground disappeared, and the sky turned black. I looked around in fear, calling Bear’s name and hoping she would return to comfort me.

That was when I heard her barking. I turned to look, and saw her sitting there next to Mark. “Kathy. You don’t know how much I’ve missed you. Have you missed me?” He asked cynically.

“Of course I have, Mark. You know that you’re the only man in my life. No matter how far apart we are, I think of you every day.” I replied.

“That’s my point, Kath. Have you ever even noticed the way your first officer looks at you? He is totally devoted to you, but you keep pushing him away. He would do anything for you, but all you can think of is me. Isn’t that selfish?”

“But Mark, you know that I love you and only you!”

“But do you really? You’ve worked with Chakotay, even having dinners with him, all the while thinking that you are in love with Mark, not him. But you haven’t felt real love for me in a long time. For all you know, I could have married and given you up for dead. I’m not asking you to forget me, I’m only asking you to give him a chance without blindly following me.”

Then the clouds swirled even faster, and I heard barking in the distance.

“Goodbye, Kathy.” Mark said in an ethereal tone. Slowly he receded into the distance. “And good luck!”

I awoke, slowly opening my eyes. I checked the time. It was 0700 hours. Just in time for breakfast.

“Chakotay,” I called over my commbadge, “meet me in the mess hall for breakfast. That’s an order.” I said in a laughing voice.

“Aye, Captain.” J J J
