| As a hairstylist with almost ten years in the industry I know that getting the style you want is easy enough... the problem is maintaining it after you leave the salon. I will provide you with tips on how to keep your style looking and feeling its best, beauty tips and advice on the latest hair and beauty trends. TIPS: Straightening * For years straightening methods have not only been damaging, but often less than effective. The new generation of CERAMIC straighteners are a godsend. They are far less damaging and don't cause flyaways as older sytle straightening irons were apt to do. These can be bought or ordered through most good salons. Facial Waxing!! * Ladies, upper lip, chin and other facial waxing is an easy and convenient way to keep any facial hair away... however, eyebrow waxing although quicker and easier than plucking, can be hugely damaging to the delicate tissue around the eye area. Waxing can lead to a breakdown in elasticity, so PLEASE take the time to pluck, the result will be a much smoother line. Waxes * Waxes are far too often overused. Use only a small amount, rub vigorously between the palms. The heat generated will make the product more pliable meaning you will need a lot less. Sunbeds * Which of us has not heard sunbed horror stories? Skin cancer aside, sunbeds rob the skin of moisture and are incredibly damaging to the skin. You may look healthy and tanned now but the effects will really show through in ten years! Think severe wrinkling, sunspots, freckles and skin with the texture of leather... not cool! Spray on tans are a little more expensive, but are huge right now, won't damage your skin, and you don't have to suffer through several sessions to see any results! Alternatively, there are some very good self tanning products available if your budget won't stretch to salon tanning, or if you are a little shy! NB: If your salon staff start using lines like "getting a base tan in a sunbed will stop you burning later," then they are not willing to tell you of the real risks. If you don't want to burn later use sunscreen or a moisturiser with SPF. Before opening my own salon, I have worked in salons which use these type of rebuttals when clients ask about risks. Ask your doctor... or better yet look at any picture of Donatella Versace!! If a salon will not tell you about sunbed risks, then your welfare is not their priority, maybe think about moving on... Stylist Advice * A good stylist should not only tell you, but also show you how the hair has been cut and how best to style it at home, as well as recommending home haircare products. If he/she does not, don't be afraid to ask, it is what we are trained to do. Conditioning Treatments * As well as masques and treatments that can be bought from your salon, most salons offer specialist conditioning treatments which will be of huge benefit to your hair especially if is dry, damaged or coloured. Your stylist should consult with you before deciding on a treatment, taking into consideration your scalp and hair condition. This is not only beneficial to the health of your hair, but is a fairly inexpensive yet luxurious and relaxing treat! Blonde Shampoo * If you have blonde, gray or white hair and you have a problem with the yellow/gold tones coming through, a purple pigmented shampoo available from salons will tone them down leaving the hair looking clean and fresh. Many people ask me if it will turn the hair purple... the answer is that these products are designed only to neutralise warm pigment, and will not colour your hair purple! PRODUCT OF THE WEEK: "Travallo" by Joico. "travallo" from Joico's prescription range is a fabulous medium hold hairspray. It is a non-aerosol spray, so as well as being environmentally friendly, it does not contain the alcohol of aerosol sprays so will not dry your hair out. Unlike an aerosol, you have a minute or so after spraying to repossition the hair before it dries. It is my personal favorite and it's smell is divine! Next weeks product is Schwarzkopf's "Mess Up" from the "Osis" range. Feel free to contact me with any questions you have on your hair or beauty regime. xxxxxKahla |
