This apple is an example of the fruit of the apple tree. The apple tree is a fruit bearing tree. The fruits are used to reproduce. When the fruit is ripe it drops from the tree to the ground below. The seeds inside the fruit plant and grow into another tree. Perhaps you have heard the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Well it really doesn't. On other plants, such as this, reproduce using flowers as the reproductive organ. The flower's the pollen is used for sexual reproduction. The flower uses it's sweet smell to attract insects to pollinate the flower. Pollen is carried by wind, water, or other animals to other flowers where the pollen, like sperm, fertalizes the other flower to reproduce. This is to prevent self pollination which is when a plant pollinates itself. Self pollination is also called asexual reproduction. |
