EXPRESSIONISM
The Expressionism is the art of the instinct, it is a dramatic, subjective painting, " expressing " human feelings. Using pathetic colors, he/she gives plastic form to the love, to the jealousy, to the fear, to the solitude, to the human poverty, to the prostitution. He/she is deformed the illustration, to stand out the feeling. Predominância of the emotional values on the intellectuals.
Main characteristics:
The painters didn't want to destroy the impressionist effects, but they wanted to take them far away. The first three painters below are included in that designation. Main artists:
Gauguin - in the decade of 1890, he lived in Taiti and it produced a series of screens that constitutes the part more acquaintance of its work. Its pictures of that time register the natural space and the people's free from the weight of the western civilization simple life. It was one of Van Gogh's few friends. Outstanding work: Young Taitianas with Flowers of Sleeve.
Cézanne - its tendency went transform the natural elements into geometric illustrations - as cylinders, cones and spheres - it is accentuated more and more, in such a way that becomes impossible for him to create again the reality second " impressions " captured by the senses. Outstanding works: Castle of Médan and Madame Cézanne.
Van Gogh - it determined deeply to create again the human beings beauty and of the nature through the color, that was the fundamental element of the painting for him. It was a solitary person. He/she was interested in the work of Gauguim, mainly for its decision of simplifying the forms of the you be, to reduce the light effects and to use zones of very defined colors. In 1888, he/she left Paris and it went to Arles, city of the south of France, where he/she started to paint outdoors. The intense sun of the Mediterranean area interfered in its painting, and he was freed completely of any naturalismo in the employment of the colors, being declared an arbitrary colorist. He/she fell in love then with the intense and pure colors, without any shading, because they had for him the function of representing emotions. However he went by several nervous crises and, after internments and medical treatments, he/she went, in May of 1890, for Anvers, a calm city to the north of France. In that time, in three months just, he/she painted about eighty screens with strong and twisted colors. In July of the same year, he committed suicide, leaving a plastic work composed by 879 paintings, 1756 drawings and ten gravuras. While he/she lived it was not recognized by the public nor for the critics, that they didn't know how to see in its work, the first steps in direction to the modern art, nor to understand the effort to free the beauty of the you be, by means of an explosion of colors. Toulouse-Lautrec - he/she Painted themes belonging to the night life of Paris, and it was also responsible for the artists' posters that came in Moulin Rouge. Bohemian, died young. Outstanding work: Ivette Guilbert that Saúda the Public.
Munch - its work THE Scream is an example of the themes that you/they sensitized the tied up artists to that tendency. In her it represents it human it doesn't present its real lines but contorce-if under the effect of its emotions. The sinuous lines of the sky and of the water, and the diagonal line of the bridge, they drive the observer's glance for the mouth of the illustration that opens up in a disturbing scream.
