We need to know your name, city and telephone number,
the number of animals involved, any health issues with the animals,
and please tell us if this is an emergency.
If you are interested in adopting a chinchilla or any other animal, *
send an email to [email protected] and
1) tell us which chinchilla you're interested in and why
2) answer the questions under Adoption Procedures and include that information in your email
3) tell us where you live.
All adoption applications are handled through email.
* Please do not call to inquire about adopting a chin. Calling will only delay the process since you must email the required information in order to be put into our system. We do not ship and you must be able to drive to meet us and finalize the adoption.
Adoption Procedures
Procedures for adopting:
Send us an email and tell us what you?re looking for and tell us the city and state in which you live. If you're interested in a chinchilla that is listed for adoption on the web site, tell us which one you like and we?ll help you decide if that is a good choice for you. When you email us, we need as much background information as you can give so we can make a good match and help you adopt the pet that you'll be happiest with.
A few of the things we need to know are:
Do you currently own any pets? If so, for how long, how many do you have and what are their sexes? If not, have you owned any in the past? If so, what happened to them?
What size and type cage do you have or plan to get to house your new pet? Give approximate dimensions. Does the cage have a wire floor or will the animal be walking on the shavings? What kind of shavings will you use in the bottom of the cage? What spacing is the wire -- walls as well as floor, ramps, and shelves (1/2? x 1/2?, 1/2? x 1?, 1? x 1?, 1? x 2?, etc.)?
Where do you plan to place the cage in your home? Have you checked for possible drafts? Will the cage be out of direct sunlight? Does that area of your home get hot anytime during the year?
What brand of food do you plan to feed your pet? What kind of treats will you offer? What type toys and items to chew do you plan to get?
How much time can you devote to playing with a chinchilla each night? Do you have a room you can chin(if applicable) proof to make out-of-cage playtime a safe and fun experience? Do you understand that chinchillas like to bounce around and play more than sitting still and being held?
Are you over 18? How many other family members are there? If you have children, what are their ages? Who will be responsible for caring for your new pet?
Please do not be offended by the questions we ask. We are not trying to pry into your private life but this is a way for us to help you get the right pet for your situation. When you answer these questions, we can discern your level of expertise and correct any misinformation you?ve received if necessary. If there is anything else you would like to tell us, feel free to do so. If you have never owned a chinchilla before, we will be happy to guide you in their care.
