Unplanned growth of cities causing mosquito menace

Express Report

Urban people suffer from mosquito nuisance because of unplanned growth of cities, which creates innumerable mosquito-breeding places. The common breeding places of 27 species of mosquitoes found in Dhaka City include drains, cesspools, ditches, ground pools, canals and pits. The larvae of aedes mosquitoes are found in containers like water jars, buckets, broken earthen pots, tires, tree holes etc. Local experts held this view at a seminar Monday on “Mosquito Control and Prevention of Dengue Fever” at the Alliance Francaise de Dhaka at Dhanmondi. The seminar was organised by the Franco-Bangladesh Association of Scholars and Trainees (FBAST). ASM Alamgir of Virology Department of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), Mohammad Ashraf Uddin of the Dhaka City Corporation and Taimur AK Mahmud of the Bangabandhu Medical University gave keynote speeches. Experts warned that the much-talked-about dengue fever might break out in an epidemic form in the country. This disease claimed at least 98 people while more than 5500 people were infected in the country, they said, adding that most of the cases occurred in urban areas instead of in rural areas. Stating that the civil society had a very strong role in making people aware of dengue menace, speakers expressed the view that cleanliness could help reduce the infection of dengue fever. They also said timely hospitalisation and efficient management of the disease are the crucial factors that can enable even most critically ill patients to survive.
