The Wing

"Shhh, child! You must not speak of that place," my nurse scolded.

"But, Nana! Why is the East Wing closed? Why is it abandoned?"

"I told you child! Do not talk of such things! Leave well-enough-alone!"

"Yes, Nana!"

"Good, now get in the bed. I don't want to hear another word about it!"

I obeyed, and the good woman kissed my forehead and snuffed out the candle before closing the door to my room. But, I could not sleep. My curiosity was too great for that. I crept out of my room and into the hall. All was quiet, not a sound could be heard.

I walked silently towards the East Stairs. No one passed that way. I was alone in the long hallways, but unafraid.  Lanterns hung from the ceiling to light my path, and my way was made plain to me. I had gone many a time down these corridors to the stairs that led to the East Wing. This was not the first time I had become curious of the unknown. Why was I not allowed down there? What was Nana hiding from me?

Fool of a child that I was, I crept on and on down the hallways, never looking back. My eagerness grew as I neared my destination. It was not long now, only around the next corner. I was so close, yet as I walked, the corridor seemed to grow in length. It gave me an uneasy feeling, but by that time, I was much too impatient to see what lay ahead to heed the warnings of the supernatural world.

I reached the staircase and opened the door. It creaked loudly, and the sound startled me, for I jumped, but kept moving.

As I advanced down the hallway, I was aware of footsteps that were not my own. They became louder and louder with every step that I took, until I could not take it anymore and prepared to run back, but the door slammed to and would not budge. I whirled around and met a terrible, dark shadow.

I let out a scream, "Nooooooo!! Nana!!!!" But, none could hear me...
