She Possessed a Poetic Innocence
PART VIII
HOME
This life, my love, can mean nothing if you are gone
For, in your absence, my own demise will not take long
Without yourself, the object of my doting adoration
It will only be a short while until my own obliteration
But, don't think I'll pine away--eaten with grief, from within
No! don't think of my love so commonly as to make mine a simple sin
I will not need, with my own hand, in melodramatic feeling
To end it all myself, the light, from my own eyes, stealing
No! don't think of my love so commonly as to make mine a simple sin
I will not pine away! Will not be eaten from within!
If I die, as die I must, it will be from passion, showing
For, I will not fade away as smoke, but as the flame, exploding
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
What a dreadful thing it was, to be young and wish to be old
To dislike kids your age, and wonder if you were so bold
As to hope in the company of adults, you might belong;
Of conversing with forty-year-olds without it feeling wrong.
They were so much wiser than you; you thought that you knew
How much they hated you being a young person, too.
------------------------------------------------------------------
My dream became a nightmare, when I imagined you
But, a school teacher was in my dream, too
He or she (it was quite unclear which one)
Was reminding me of all the work I'd left undone:
A report about the Inuits, my math and English, too
I had no idea that so many things were due
I raced home (in my dream) to find that all my work
Had been mutilated by a rabid squirrel, and then I went berserk
It never once occurred to me, that the vision wasn't real
"Don't fool around with homework," was how I was taught to feel
But, now that I'm awake, I know I was mistaken
Besides, the squirrel part couldn't happen when one's wakin'
But, there are tooth marks on my papers, and someone better start explainin'
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I guess I should'a got better grades
Cuz now I'm cleanin' with the maids
And pickin' up things that are ick
Ugh! I think I'm gonna be sick!
I should have paid attention in school
Cuz this is so not cool
Nothing against janitors, they work real' tough
But it's not for me, I've had enough
-------------------------------------------
"Just a short canoe ride over the falls.
I won't be back in today, so hold all my calls."

"Yes sir, but what of your meeting at eight,
and then that all-important dinner date?"

"Cancel them all, and give my regrets.
Tell them 'He must do something before he forgets'"

"What sir, might that something be?"
"Ah...tomorrow morning, I think you'll see."
------------------------------------------------------
Whence comest thou, fair maiden; comest in a dream?
Dost thou come by the dusty road or by the winding stream?
Dost thou come on the air as the birds do in the spring?
Dost thou come on foot to me, and all thy treasures bring?
Oh, come whichever way thou choose; I shall be waiting here.
Whence comest thou, fair maiden; when shall thou appear?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Truly! "It's the people that count!"
I know it sounds a tad clich
But, tell me, what's it all amount
At the end of each poor day

Yes, if you had stayed in your room
And not gone out to play
You might have escaped some gloom,
And not been in the fray

But, I tell you true, you'd be alone
And lonely's not the way...
Not the way to have much fun
So this, at last, I'll say:

When the day comes to an end
And good things just don't stay
I hope that somewhere, there's a friend
To take the loneliness away
------------------------------------
Why do you wander and why do you wail?
I know it's your voice that comes on the gale
So, what did I do to keep your soul here?
I can't remember, but you won't disappear
I wish I were dreaming, 'cause this is too much
I'm not one for ghosts and hauntings and such
--------------------------------------------------------
My next true lover will keep his eyes on me
And not flit from girl to girl like some busy bee
---------------------------------------------------------
Smile, and say cheese...
Oh, and you can't sneeze!
Or cough or wheeze...
There, put your hands on your knees
Now, look at the camera, please
1... 2... 3... "click"
Alright, you're done...
Wasn't that a breeze?
What's that? Oh!
No, I don't give freebees.
Don't worry,
Tomorrow morning you'll get my fees.
-----------------------------------------------
It was 100 degrees
- my Life -
An obtuse angle -
Nowhere near straight,
but not so far from being right
--------------------------------------
"Bee Bop A Lula and Doo Run Run!"
I swear I heard this in a song
Did Elvis sing it, some time past?
I bet he sung it really fast
And shook his hips like a Hawaiian son
------------------------------------------------
Falling in Love against the Grain
Hush now, dear, no need to explain
We couldn't foresee it, and we didn't try
But, there's really no reason for you to cry
Even if we didn't want it, it's a good thing, my dear
So, tell me you're happy, love, now that you're here
--------------------------------------------------------------
I'd give you a daisy today
But the daisies have all gone away
There's snow on the ground
So not a bud will be found
They all know it's too cold to play
------------------------------------------
The bees lit on the Cypress Knees
To stop awhile in their pollen-hunting
As they buzzed wearily,
and spoke in tired drones,
The world began to quake beneath them
And the bees managed one last burst of strength
And flew away from what they thought was harm
God sighed as He worked water through
the Cypress Knees, sculpting their knarled forms
Nature was so jumpy
Every time He drew near His own creation,
She ran from Him,
Afraid of His great force of power,
And forgetful of the gentle touch of
Her Master's hands.
------------------------------
Did you hear the whistle blow?
Calling all young men away
To fight overseas, a dang'rous foe
Pray they come home again someday
