The Blade

The land was smothered in dying flames
And blood of those who fought
Of friends and foes who gave their lives
Would all it be for nought?

I stood with him atop the hill
He told me I should flee
But, I would stay with him
Or he would go with me

Or I would perish by his side
As women weren't to do
But, I would not leave him there to die
My feelings, I could not undo

Then
he rode towards us, blade held high
And my love pushed me aside
As the sword came down upon his head
And away did his foe ride

I bent over him and my tears fell
He tried smiling with sweet care
But, no matter how much strength he put in
The smile just would not appear

For, he knew in his heart that he was not to live
And I knew it in mine, as well
He begged me to run, for he could not have peace
Knowing he left me alone in this hell

I tried to assure him that I would be safe
As long as I could be by his side
And with a stroke of his hand to my cheek
He closed his eyes softly, and died

I laid my head to rest on his
As my hands caressed his face
And I heard his assailant ride toward me
No one else was alive in that place

His eyes pierced my back and my blood ran cold
As he watched as I took every breath
And then he spoke as kind as he could
Though, his words were still cruel as Death

"I would spare your life, fair maiden,
If you would have me in his stead
How could you love him who could not protect you
And now lies struck stiff and dead?"

"I would not dream of having you
Kill me if you so choose
But, I will not leave my love's corpse
Even though his limbs hang loose."

Even as I spoke, I did not expect
That he would take those words to heart
But, he took out his blade, and made me see
Though, I did not nake a start

I heard the swish, and felt the pain
That seemed only in my head
I did not linger in this world
And soon knew I was dead

My spirit flew to the heavens
To be at peace once more
And then I saw him in the clouds
And towards him my feet tore

I ran gaily through that span of sky
Seeking my love of earth
He saw me and ran to meet me
And held me around my girth

Then I noticed he began to cry
But, that seemed rather odd
How could he be crying?
Weren't we now with God?

But his tears were flowing all the same
I knew them all too well
But, when he let me go and waned
Only then did I
know hell
