Big Bend National Park is on the border.
The south-east flow of the Rio Grand is
halted by the bend and three georgeous
canyons, then it heads north-east,
before continuing the south east journey
to the gulf. It is hard to find a place with such varied geography. Mountains, desert, river make this a place you can come back to time and again and be in a different place each time. Maybe not as vast as Grand Canyon of Arizona, but still there is enough there to take a life time to explore.
From the South rim of the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park. Light and atmosphere were given to silhouette a tree whose folliage was destroyed by fire. Lookin west through a window along the Laguna Meadow Trail. Unfortunately, a lot of this "atmosphere" is caused by polution. There are some power plants in the area, in Mexico, that dirty the air with sulfurous coal. But they are not the only culprits. Air currents from as far as Los Angeles help give this atmospheric haze.
And that nagging thought is always close: Texas is the most polluted state in the nation. Right on target with the "Everything is bigger in Texas". But we are going to do something. Dont know what, since the state government seems to be in the pockets of the polluters, but it will change, for sure. We are kicking our governer upstairs.
The climb to the South Rim is an enjoyable experience. The scenery changes every mile, whether you go by way of the Penicles, or take the shorter Laguna Meadow route. This view is on the latter route.
Later, I came back to this magic spot, this is what was there.
